Struggling with Fluids

Recommended Posts

I am struggling with fluids. How does everyone get the required amount of fluids? Is there apps to help track? Does all fluids count or has to be Water? I am one week post op sleeve and have soooo much to learn.. I heard sugar free popsicles count for fluids/how does that measure in ozs? Thanks

All fluids count. Tea, shakes, even popsicles.
Baritastic app tracks fluids.
You'd have to weigh the popsicle on your food scale to know how many oz of Fluid it counts as. I ate them but didn't include them in my fluids because I had no issue getting in Water.

Btw I love that Baritastic app! You can set reminders on it to drink and when you can eat it can help you eat slower. It's fun!

I loved sweet tea before surgery. Can I still drink it? Thought I couldn't this would be a miracle if I could lol

Can you? Yes. Should you? No. You could try sugar free sweet tea, though if that helps you get your fluids in. I personally would stick with Water and shakes. SF Jello would also count towards your goal along with the SF pops.

:) Nope.

What helped me stay hydrated was hot tea that I let cool off a bit. I used either Decaf or herbal and unsweetened. I know, eww-unsweetened, LOL, but you get used to it.

broth counts too.

Aw, didn't mean to get your hopes up about the tea. I haven't touched sugar since two weeks before surgery. If you can sweeten it with equal or something like that then it'd be ok.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
