Tips needed-Hard to space meals, drinks

Recommended Posts

So I'm just 8 days post RNY. started eating soft solids yesterday.

I'm finding it hard to space meals and stop drinking 30 minutes before. For example, I meant to eat a meal at a certain time and forgot to stop drinking 30 min. before, so I had to push back mealtime.

Then today, my husband is grilling and I anticipated it to be ready at 5:30 but now not ready until 6:00.

I'm sure it will get easier, but any tips?

Hey AZBlackhawk

I haven't tried it myself yet, just downloaded and registered, but my nutritionist recommended a smartphone app called BARITASTIC it's got timers and food logs and recipes. My op is in a week and I'll definitely give it a go.

I have to stop drinking 10-15 min before I eat. Sometimes I drink almost right before I eat. The reason I have to drink that close to my meals is to wash out the stomach so to speak. After I eat I have to wait at least 30 min before I can drink again.

I was told just 30 minutes after, not before AND after. Every nutritionist is different, but I'd think after is more important, anyway. I drink right up to, and sometimes sneak a sip while I'm eating just to clear my palate (don't tell LOL). The 30-minute wait after is main one to watch.

I was told 30 minutes before and after so I rotate between eating and drinking and I start drinking first thing in the morning when I wake up. 7ish in the morning is when I start to drink. Then 10am is when I have my first meal of the day. Around 10:30a I drink again and so on... I had to sort this out for a few weeks before getting the hang of it. I'm still used to eating barely anything.

Just came across this article. Very informative. Just to educate us on our new lifestyle. I actually saved this article on my home screen so I can refer to it.

I know why we don't drink while we eat and why we should wait a good while after. What I'm curious to know is why people have to stop 30min before they eat? I have 10-15min, and it's to clean out the stomach before I eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
