Pre-op clear liquids -protein powder

Recommended Posts

I am on 3 days of pre-op Clear Liquids. It says I should have whey Protein Shakes mixed with Water. I am using Muscle Milk brand. It is not clear or translucent when mixed with water. Is this okay?

The Protein Shakes don't need to be clear. The hospital gave me high Protein ensure and I started Premier Protein shakes when I got home.

My understanding is that we can't have pureed fruit and vegetables mixed in with our shakes at this stage, nor can we have other soft foods blended in. My surgeon said something about not wanting any particles in there. The nutritionist recommended Protein Shakes and certain liquids (diluted juice, strained Soups, clear broths) mixed with unflavored Protein Powder.

I've learned that different surgeons have different demands for their pre-op diet. Some say Ensure and Carnation Instant Breakfast are fine while others keep patients strictly on Optifast. Some are 3 day pre-op liquid diets and some are 2 or more weeks. For mine, it's 2 weeks. The Nut gave us a list of brands she'd vetted thru the manufacturers & then showed us what to look for on the labels if we wanted different brands. There was a short list of Protein Drinks our surgeon would not approve.

For us, the day before surgery is the clear diet day. For that, they listed a few brands that carry unflavored Protein Powder to add to crystal light drink, Power Aid Zero's, broth, hello, etc. another option is to grab a few bottles of Isopure. They are clear liquid pre-made Protein drinks. Many GNC's carry them. Here in Oregon, I found them at Vitamin Shoppe. Kind of chalk-y, but survivable for the short term. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
