Questions about postop for pending 7/13 RNY Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

It's definitely getting real now. I'm on day 4 of my surgeons required 2 week pre-op liquid diet. My pre-op appt is 7/6. Admit is 6am on Thursday 7/13. If I'm in the hospital for three days? Do you guys think I'll need much help at home after I'm released? My husband is usually working out of state in the summer. He's arranged to work in the area for at least two weeks postop, but he will need to go to work. My mom feels she should be here full time while he's gone. Some friends have said they can be available as well. I'm not the type to ask for help & don't even know what help I might need. So, this is me asking for your help in telling me if you needed anyone around when you got home.

I would take all the help anyone has offered. Definitely have someone stay with you when you get home. I had trouble bending over to pick things off the floor, etc.

I did not need or want help. My husband was at work the day I was discharged and my parents dropped me off at home. My dad did run to the pharmacy for my meds and that was helpful.

My husband worked as usual and was in charge of preschool drop off and pickups for two weeks but that was about it.

I have my surgery on Monday the 10th! Maybe we could message each other and I could tell you how mine went and how I felt. I don't have a boyfriend or family where I am at so I will be doing it by myself for the most part with friends stopping by, so hopefully, everything will be okay. Congratulations!

I needed help. You may need help too. I just had someone around just in case. Things can get emotional, you may lose track of anything your surgical team might want you to take notes of, taking meds consistently... Even eating like you may forget to eat cause you're really not hungry.

I recommend someone sticks around to help you out because sometimes you won't even feel like or have the energy to do anything else. That's all I did was just lay there unless I needed my pain meds. The possibilities are endless here.

Sounds great Emma93! Lets message each other. Nice to know you're having yours the same week. Sorry you do not have family near. We were so shocked when my husband was offered a few weeks of his type of work here in town. He's usually off the West Coast and somewhere in the Midwest or Southeast coast this time of year. I'm looking forward to hearing how your doing & it'll be cool to update each other along the way.

Appreciate the feedback. Makes sense and I didn't think about it like that. Looks like you're doing great & you're only just over two mins out. Congrats!

Thank you. Bending over didn't even dawn on me. We have a little dog (who thinks she's a princess) I need to feed, plus being a klutz by nature, I'm sure I'll drop something here & there.

YOU WILL NEED help not only that even emotional support I'm 7 days post on and having panic attacks when my partner leaves for work I have to drive to my mums house otherwise I'm a lost cause

Oh, I'm sorry you are having panic attacks. Those are so miserable. An anesthesiologist I know said that can happen sometimes postop while the anesthesia is getting out of your system. It throws everything off balance. If it helps any, he said it's about a month for it to clear out. Maybe it will be sooner with all the liquids you'll be drinking?

You don't need someone with you all day but having someone nearby helps. After a week of recovery at home I was feeling very weak, faint when I got up, and my heart was racing. Turns out I had developed an ulcer from one of the meds they gave me to prevent blood clots. I was glad I had my daughter home that day to drive me to the doctor and ER.

Just had sleeve on 6/27.. my biggest problem was pain. Especially along the waist line and below. I am still unable to bend at the waist . I needed help the first day after surgery at home. Had friends that would drop by daily and help with certain things I was unable to do. Definitely purchase a grabber to help you pick things up off the floor and it will help with doing certain tasks ..also if you have a pharmacy that delivers or a friend that can bring you what you need for a few days that is helpful. Good luck to you.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
