Hi folks,

I'm 10 days away from having my bypass. I'm trying to get my head around what happens afterwards and the one big hole I have so far is activity/mobility in the first few weeks:

How limited are you after you've been discharged? Can you bend?

How much are you able to walk?

When will I be able to ride a bicycle again?

Any tips and experiences gratefully received!

Love & peace,

Jx

5 days out from Bypass. I walk at least every hour not so good on bending because of binder and it hurts I woke up in the night when I went to get up my binder if folded over and I now have a pinched nerve. today I have done 1576 steps the day of surgery I did about 300 so as long as My fitbit increases everyday I am Happy. I Hope this helps Hanging in there, It took me 4 days till I was ready to not make my self walk and did just the every 4 hours walking but even with the crazy pinched nerve I don't want to sit still now. Good Lunck. I have lost 20 lbs since surgery on Monday, I know it's going to be worth it.

I had a hard time bending the first two weeks so I limited it. I didn't feel like I could bike until about a month post op. I would get nauseous.

Walking I've just taken it as I can. I'm 8 weeks out and can easily walk 2 miles but I had to work up to it slowly. I remember three weeks out being exhausted and cranky after 1/2 mile.

I couldn't bend at all the first two weeks. I still doubt I can walk as far as I used to but I'm working on that. I have lost about maybe 25-30lbs after surgery.... Which is awesome...

Thanks folks!

First obvious question of the morning... what's a binder?

I was quickly up and walking. sadly I had some back issues that made it very painful for me to walk, but after a nerve block, I have had over 10 000 steps every day (mostly over 15 000) since 2 weeks post op.

It would hurt a little to bend over, because of internal surgery wounds, but other than that, no problem. I only had bandages/band-aids on my wounds. I had the staples removed at one week post op (had to have an MRI, it's usually done at 10 days).

The quicker you get up and moving, the better it is.

I was up walking in the hospital the next day four times. Even now that I am home (i had a VSG to RNY) i feel much better when I am more active. I am lucky though that I never had any pain post op and never any nausea. Not sure about riding a bike, but you need to walk as much as possible when yu get out of hospital. It will aid in your healing process.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
