Protein shakes with 7 grams sugar is this too much?

Recommended Posts

I've found a great shake or Protein milk it has 30 grams of protein but also has 7 grams sugar. I've been drinking it since day 3. But up till a couple days ago I could only finish 1/2 at a time so I figured 3.5 grams was ok. Now I can drink a whole one. Day 11 and I'm down 30 lbs but afraid that I might stall if im getting too much sugar. It has 190 calories also. How many grams sugar a day are we allowed with the sleeve?

The reason why you like it is that it has a lot of sugar and tastes better. 7g is a lot higher than recommended by my team.

Both the GNC Lean and Premier Proteins have 1-2g of sugar.

What's a measly 7g sugar gonna do with the 30g of Protein?

Follow your protein and all else should fall in place....but Iearned to not count anyway. Hasn't affected my weight loss anyway.

That's my story...

I think it's def on the high side, but I would look at your sugar and carb calories for the entire day and that would give you a better idea on whether you have a good balance.

7g is on the high side if you're looking at a daily intake of not exceeding 20g. Remember, things like milk, yogurt, fruit and anything that you should be eating as well has sugar in it. The most you can do to limit your sugar intake with the GS (or any diet for that matter) is better for you. Sugar really IS the #1 problem in our diets. It's in everything we eat with refined sugars (high fructose corn syrups) and hides in things you'd never think has it like dairy... I try and keep my total daily sugar count below 15g.

7 grams is on the high side when there are so many other options that are lower.

When your calories and just general consumption is low post-op, 7g is pretty significant when you are taking in less than 100 calories a day.

At 2 years out I eat a lot, so 7 grams wouldn't be a big deal to me, but I would never blow 7 grams of my carbs on a Protein Shake.

I think about my macros and nutrients as $$ and I try to get the most bang for my buck.

Sugar is not my problem (I don't eat/drink dairy). I also don't have a set point of sugar grams set by my nut either). I do/am responsible for what I choose though. I've shared part of my story and I'm fine. Can't speak for everyone here. Just so you know.

I go 7/3/17 for my first post op follow up with the surgeon. I'm gonna see what he says. As of today I'm down 34 lbs and I'm drinking lots of Water probably not getting as many calories as I should and haven't had dumping so maybe I'm ok. I had one day where my sugar was way too low I had only gotten in about 200 calories and 30 grams Protein. I'm just eating/ drinking enough till I feel full. Sometimes 2 bites does it. It's working now. Just don't wanna stall and wanna stay healthy. Thanks for all the feed back.

What do you mean your sugar was way too low? Do you mean blood sugar? Or intake? Because I'm not aware there is a "too low" for amount of sugar you intake.

My blood sugar dropped. I have hypoglycemia. So I've learned that hasn't changed with surgery I'll have to eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
