Slimed? PB'd Help me understand

Recommended Posts

Ok, I had my first fill on sept 29th, My surgery was in April 07. Been doing great, when I feel a little pressure sometimes I know that is all I can eat.

But tonight not sure what happened, maybe too fast or too much at once. But it felt like the food was stuck, my chest hurt, I broke out into a sweat, was spitting up, burping and then finally kind of threw up some mucus. It was terrible, i felt terrible, it really hurt. It felt like I was foaming at the mouth

I am scared I may have done something to my band, I feel fine now, it took about 20 min to pass.

How do I know if I am ok, if my band is ok?

Just want to make sure , I am going to start timing my bites after this one.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks

Sounds like you had your first PB.

The pain comes from what the esophagus is doing to clear the food, or it can be a referred pain. Spitting up was probably from the sliming -- so much salivation that you can't keep up with it. The burping is quite common - always precedes my PBs. I get a mix of needing to burp but not being able to, and being able to burp very small burps. Gurgling is also common at this point. What you threw up was most likely not mucus, but saliva. The saliva that is associated with PBs is much thicker and ropey - not the relatively watery saliva that you're used to. It can definitely look like mucus, and it wil hold its own in Water. Sometimes people equate it to egg whites.

Yep, definitely your first PB.

You are most likely fine, but after a PB you should go on liquids for 24 hours. This will give whatever you did time to heal a bit.

Things to look out for...heartburn, hiccups, sever consistent pain, cannot eat even if you're hungry, port pain...if you have these symptoms you may want your doc to bring you in for a look-see to make sure you did not slip your band.

I had my surgery on 8-23-07 I just got my internet back and this is the first time I have been able to discuss my surgery and problems with other people. I hate to sound ignorant but the term PB's is unfamiliar to me although the symptoms you describe are very familiar even though I have not had a fill yet I cannot have white flour and somethings are just not mixing with my stomach sometimes after just 2 bites if I am not carefull about how I chew I get that excruciating heavy feeling at the base of my stomach with extreme pressure and burning pain when I try to drink and wash it down I learned it made it worse and then I had the foamy salivation and finally vomit, I was not surebecause I found out I was pregnant 1 week after my surgery I had a lot of morning sickness, lost the baby and 40lbs from Aug 1 to Oct 1. So I was a little slow on the healing emotionally and physically finally eating solids. My first follow up they did not fill me because I was not yet eating I was stuck trying to force 500 cal a day now should I have these PB's even though I have not had a fill? and can somebody explain what this is?

So sorry for your loss. The biggest thing is making sure you get your Protein in that will help you lose the weight and feel fuller and feel better and have more energy. something I use is called IDS New whey Protein it has 42 grams of protein per 3.1 oz vile, you can order them online or get them at the Vitamin store. I highly recommend them. I had alot of restriction during my first 3 months even without a fill, didnt really feel that hungry and lost quite a bit of weight. I havent had any problems until yesterday, You might want to go back and start over with liquids for a couple of days then go to mushies and see how those work out, and make sure you eat slowly and chew alot, the key once you start eating real food is to eat slowly and chew really good. In my mushie stage I ate alot of refried Beans mixed with rice (high fat) but high protein. And still choose those when I am out and about and feel hungry. Good luck to you , and read through the post on here they are very helpful, if you go to the food one they have alot of really good examples. But remember protein, protein, protein.

It's completely possible to PB with no fill in the band.

I am well restricted and am learning my band...what I can eat and what I can't eat. With that said, I do this frequently. Well, only twice what you describe. Taco Bell is a no no for me. I thought I was dying. That pain has caused me to never want to do that again.

But other than that, I do slime frequently. After eating, I just lean over the sink and it just comes out of my esophogas. I think I eat too quickly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
