I had my sleeve/hernia repair 3 weeks ago on 6/6/17. I am still having really bad pain at the largest incisional site. Surgeon prescribed ultram every 4 hours and told me to buy a girdle or spanks to give compression and support to abdomen. He says I am hurting because he cut my muscle. I cannot bend over or twist from side to side because of the severe pain. I am still home and due to return to work on July 10th. Ive seen others return to work within 1-2 weeks. Have some of you experienced a lot of incisional pain? Anyone been off work more than 3 weeks? Any suggestions for me?

I had incision pain in one area due to infection, but it doesn't appear that is your issue. Honestly, if you are in severe pain, keep after your surgeon. It is most likely nothing, but I wouldn't let it go until I felt better. I took 3.5 weeks off.

Thank you for replying to my post. At my 2 week post op appointment I told them I was still in a lot of pain. I was told to move and walk more, and was told I could return to work in 2 weeks, which would be 4 wks post op. I will stay on them because I refuse to return to work when I can't even bend over and tie my shoe. I have to do a lot of bending, pushing and lifting at work.

I had the same problem.... I returned to work 5 days after surgery, but I work as a cook at a steakhouse. So there is a lot of lifting and prepping. I started to get really bad pain my 2nd day back at work. On my 3rd day back I had to leave. It hurt so bad. I realized I needed more time off. I was given a white strap that went around my abdomen, and I noticed when I strapped it tight that it supported my abdomen and relieved the pain. I kept wearing it everyday all day until the 6 weeks were up. I then returned to work and have been stronger than ever.

The pain was in the main incision. I felt fine 2 days after wearing the strap. The strap worked as a girdle and helped tremendously. I recommend taking as much time off as they are willing to give you. Thankfully my job was fine with it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
