I am a little over 3 months post RNY; what kind of whole grains can I eat? I am fearful, though, of the extra carbs. Any tips and suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

I don't know if there's any difference with whole grains between RNY and the sleeve. But whole grains are good for you. They're complex carbs. They break down slow and your body processes them differently than simple carbs, they have Fiber, Protein, etc. My doc/nut encourage eating complex carbs...of which I do. Hasn't played any negative part in my weight loss journey either. Many of the whole grains have protein in them too, if that's an issue you may have thought of. Quinoa, Amaranth, Lentils, etc. These are great grains to eat. When in doubt, ask your nut.

My NUT allows us two whole grain servings daily. I eat Whole grain crackers and breads (toasted). I've had some Farro which is an ancient whole grain with high Protein. And every now and again I eat popcorn. Eating whole grains and fruits has not affected my weight loss. I'm still losing about 10 pounds a month.

I wish I could eat whole grains. Well, I suppose I do in the form of oatmeal, and occasionally lentils, but otherwise there are no whole grain products in Japan (they love simple carbs here). There is brown rice, but my digestive system can't handle it, along with other grains like barley and bulgur (that was pre-op due to gastrointestinal issues I've had my whole life). I'm going home this summer for a couple of weeks so I'll try some then and see how they affect me.

Pretty much any lower carb high fiber, decent amount of Protein whole grain food is ok. Just know it will fill you up after 2 or 3 bites so always eat your protein first. Unless im really craving a quesadilla or something i skip starches all together. I can eat them i just don't want to, it's to heavy for me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
