New here :) Insurance question.

Recommended Posts

Hello I'm new year (and scared lol) I've been thinking about getting VSG and while doing all my research I pulled out all my insurance papers and it says it won't cover insurance won't cover "bariatric surgery unless medically necessary". I'm 350+ lbs and I know my BP is high so I do think it would be considered medically necesssay but I'm just wondering if I'm just getting my hopes up. I haven't been to a doctor in years so diabetes may also be something I've developed, I have really bad sciatica and PCOS.

I guess my question is has anyone got their WLS approved with it's not covered but medically necesssay? I know zero about insurance stuff so idk how this all works. Thank you for your time :)

Insurance companies will not cover anything unless it's medically necessary. It's confusing wording, but basically, you have a chance at being covered. They usually have a medical policy detailing what criteria you would need to meet in order for your surgery to be approved. Calling your insurance company to find out what criteria need to be met is the first step. Good luck.

Check the policy online, most have online logons and you can put in your policy number and get the info, or email an ins coordinator through that portal with direct questions about criteria - they all vary greatly. Some require certain bmi w or w/o comorbidities, 2 yrs of records from your PCP that they have discussed weight loss or that you have been on a weight loss program documented by PCP, some only require 3-6 months supervised weight loss, so it is best to investigate w all those questions.

Your bmi should be high. When the number is above 40 ( I believe ) is already a dangerous number. They should approve .

I'm almost 100% sure it's well above 40 (which I'm ashamed to even admit that)

Oh I am pretty sure you will qualify. I did with no problem. 40 or higher gets approved and 35 with things like high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis can get you approved too.

Capital Blue Cross Shield. I called today but they're customer service dept closed at noon so I'll have to call back Monday. I'm just so so nervous because I don't want to get my hopes up...I'm not worried about a dr approving me because I know I meet the requirements it's just having the insurance pay for it is another thing...I don't even mind going through the 6month required meetings, appts, ect if need be.

Before I had blue shield too and I was approve in certain hospitals .. and insurance was no problem, just the requirements of the 6 months with dietician and psychological. Is the doctor job to send the information to your insurance for them to believe you really need this. And with this high bmi would be no problem. You will just need to do the requirements. So have faith.

I think you will get approved. But you will have to choose a surgeon and they go through all the hoops of getting you approved. You just relax and concentrate on you. Let them do that work. 😀

Don't feel bad. Based on my height and weight (308), mine is a 56! The approved right away based on that. You should be fine

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
