Since someone asked, I eat double Fiber wheat bread, which 4 grams per slice. So there CAN be somewhat high-fiber bread. Not exactly sure if/when/how much I'll be eating of that after surgery, though, and certainly during the losing phase I won't make it a staple or priority.

My surgeon's dietitian recommends a normal healthy diet with (obviously) a focus on Protein. I know a lot of surgeons recommend a keto-like diet and I'm very thankful mine does not. I don't see a reason why healthy foods like Beans, fruit, and whole grains have to be cut out completely and put in the mental "bad!" category as if they're the same as a candy bar.

Gentle reminder - carbs turn to sugar in the bloodstream. ALL carbs.

If you're insulin resistant or diabetic like a lot of us are (or were pre-surgery), your body can and will overreact to the sugar in foods. It cranks out extra insulin to handle the sugar, the insulin that goes unused turns to fat.

Fruits and vegetables are the preferred sources of carbs for us because they have real fiber, and other Vitamins and minerals along with them. It's not empty carbs like bread, rice, potatoes, sweets, which might have the same carb count but a LOT less nutritional value.

I agree with Jess9395. They're just not the best choice for bariatric patients. Maybe an occasional treat once you hit maintenance, but unnecessary for most of us in the losing phase, despite what doctors and nutritionists "allow."

I don't vilify all carbs and nope not same category as a candy bar, but saying they aren't necessary isn't saying they are. I also don't consider beans in the same category as whole grains and fruit is another category altogether.

There aren't two categories of food, "bad" and "good."

Some food is better than other foods for weight loss. Some foods are a regular part of a healthy diet, some are good in moderation and some better as an occasional treat.

And it's different for everyone.

Truth is we NEED protein because our body can't manufacture it. We need Vitamins and fiber, but can get them from supplements.

We also need energy, but we can convert extra calories from any source into energy--not just carbs.

Sorry, didn't mean to direct my comment at you! I was referring to those who insist Keto is the best way to eat (not just for them personally but in general). You just literally can't eat fruit or beans on keto, you don't have enough carbs in the day. So those become "bad" foods on that diet. I personally think that's crazy! But I do know keto works for many people, so to each his own I guess!

I'm going to do exactly what my surgeon tells me for at least a year. After that if I want to experiment with different ratios of carbs or fat, I'll do it. But I figure I've been knowledgeable and well-versed in nutrition for years and I'm still extremely obese, so I'm gonna go with what the person who's rearranging my organs wants me to do, LOL!

Smart! I tell people you trusted your doc to cut you open, trust your doc to advise your diet.

And... to those who say listen to your body or you know your body best... well listening to my body got me obese! I'm gonna listen to someone else for a while.

Have to agree when first trying to lose weight wheat products slow down the process. If you want to maintain start eating simple carbs crackers, breads, Bagels, rice, Pasta if you're trying to lose stay away from them but I still lost weight eating potatoes. It's just wheat that seems to slow my weight loss. I'm close to my goal so I sometimes have wheat products. I started eating bread at 9 months post op but it wasn't a daily thing.

I am 6 months post op RNY and just started eating pretzels and some bread. I noticed however that my weight loss is stalling and I'm definitely attributing it to eating the carbs. Plus I don't "feel" as good when I eat them. Too heavy. Stopping now so we will see if my weight loss gets back on track

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
