Gained weight at hospital for surgery...?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve surgery on Monday 6/26, and my weight was 262. When I was discharged yesterday my weight was 270! Now today I'm down to 268, but that's still a 6 pound gain since surgery. I keep trying to tell myself it's the IV fluids, but it still worries me a lot. Did this happen to anyone else? How long before you start really losing?

Yesterday was my first day logging food and I hit 203 calories, so I really don't think overeating is the issue.

Thank you for any help or advice you can give! I'm really stressing about this!

This is very common. Most likely they gave you steroids while in the hospital which will cause you to retain Water weight amoung other things. This type of weight gain should reverse itself very quickly. Congrats on the surgery, and don't spend too much time on the scale the first month post-op as your body will be recovering!

It's the fluids. Stay off the scale for the first month. You'll drive yourself nuts watching the scale go up and down seemingly at random while your body adjusts. Even after the first month there is sometimes no rhyme or reason to it. Congrats on surgery!

Thank you so much! That's very reassuring!

I gained about 9 pounds. When I said something to my surgeon at my first post-op visit she asked me why I weighed myself. Anyhow, it does come off. I just think they should tell us ahead of time that it might happen so we aren't shocked when it does.

Fluids. I had the same issue. Keep drinking Water and peeing. At the end of week 2 you'll be down like magic.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
