Vitamin struggles, need suggestions!

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am 3 months post op as of yesterday and down 50 pounds woohoo. My biggest struggle right now is getting in the Vitamins. I will admit I take them infrequently. The chewable made me sick to my stomach. My doctor advanced me to a pill but it tastes so terrible. I take Bariatric Advantage. Does anyone have a Multivitamin recommendation and a Calcium? I really want to find something, preferably a one a day.

Have you tried Alive! chewable Calcium with D3? I use it and I have not problems. It reminds me of Gummy bears.

I also use Alive! Women's Multivitamin. Unfortunately not every flavor is delicious. When I plan these Vitamins, I take two of the same.

Also buy the small pill containers. I have 8 (see picture below). That's an example of one of them. They come in all colors. I have one of each and stack them in a rainbow. It makes me laugh but also reminds me. I do a pack and go for the week. In addition there is the app called Round. I use it to because it sends notifications to my phone to remind me to take my vitamins.

I hope this helps you.

I take over-the-counter Centrum Vitamins and a generic store-brand calcium citrate. My nutritional lab work looks perfect and everything is within normal limits.

I only take one Centrum daily, so a 90-day supply is about $10 at the most. The bariatric vitamins require you to take 3 to 4 per day and cost about $40 for a 90-day supply.

the bariatric chewable vitamins are kind of gross tasting, right? I had such fond memories of flintstones Vitamins and thought they would taste like that, but alas, no.

I was approved for a regular Vitamin at about 3 months. I use garden of life. for a few months, I broke the pill in half, but now swallow it whole.

If you avoid taking them because it's difficult to swallow, maybe try the vitamin patches? I've been thinking seriously about that for the first couple of months, anyway. If you stick with the pills--chewable or otherwise--I second the suggestion of using the pillbox. I have one for a week that has 14 sections, a morning and an evening for each day. It removes the "did I or didn't I?" factor--pulling out the container is just part of my routine.

Best of luck!

I take the Nutrametrix (or Isotonix) powder multi-vitamins and Calcium. You have to drink them on an empty stomach but can eat 15 minutes later. The are more expensive but are 95% absorbed so you only have to drink the Multi-Vitamin once a day. I generally do it in the morning. I use the Bariatric Advantage Lemon chewables for the rest of my Calcium, they taste like starbursts to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
