Pre-surgery diet sheet

Recommended Posts

I need clarity if anyone has been through this type of thing before. I went in for my 2nd weight check and the nurse asked if I was following the yellow sheet "food/diet guidelines" including cutting out liquid calories etc. anyways, I told her the surgeon didn't tell me I had to, we just talked briefly and he said to come in for 3 weight checks then they'll start scheduling procedures and actual appointments for the duration (we more-so talked about me going back to college in the future). He said NOTHING about following the yellow sheet. The nurse proceeded to tell me that the only reason Someone wouldn't have to follow it is if They are too close to 40 BMI with no comorbidity.

I am about 42 BMI, no comorbidity.

Has anyone "not" had to follow the before surgery diet? Why and what was your BMI?

I'm wondering if I'm one of those people who don't need to follow it. Obviously I will ask my doctor but it's after hours now and I'm too curious about this and if anyone of you were/are in the same boat.

Thanks! :)

I was on Optifast for 3 weeks before surgery I had bmi of 42

I just looked up Optifast. Did you lose weight from being on that, it would look like I'd go right under 40 on a Meal Replacement that said it was for a "serious solution for weight loss" lol

There appears to be enormous variation in pre-op diets and regimes.

I read about people's liquid diets and then look at my program, which is all real food (albeit very low calorie/ low carb/ sugar/ fat).

Clearly there is an end point, which is to reduce the fat layer encasing your liver to enable access to your stomach for surgery, but many different paths.

I think you have to trust your medical practitioners. Their experience is far greater than any individual here.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
