I am so glad I found this forum. I am 5 days post op and I am struggling with how much my taste has changed. I cannot stand anything sugar-free. It is waaaay too sweet. I drank the Preimer shakes before surgery and it is so sticky sweet that I have to Water it down. I have added unflavored Protein Powder to Jello and it still gags me. I'm so nervous that I won't be able to get enough Protein in. Anyone else have these issues and what helped? I know it will be easier in a few weeks when I can add more food, but I am struggling right now.

I drank a lot of homemade broths the first week post op. Most people do not meet their Protein goal the first week. Just do the best you can. There are clear Protein Drinks you can buy. Isopure is one brand. I didn't like them, but some people do. Things will definitely get better once you are able to eat puréed foods. Hang in there.

My doctor won't allow Protein until 4 weeks out of surgery I'd say check with your doctor. I also found the sugar free popsicles too sweet. And the premiere shakes annoy me in taste so I just started making smoothies with them but I'm on week 3.

Knox Gelatine - I add a packet of plain to every cup of broth, 8 more Protein and no taste. Try consume, it's a clarified, high protein broth.

Some ladies in the support group I found said they use GENEPRO. They add it to everything they drink, dissolves in hot or cold.

Also, add 2 pits of Knox to the Jello - gives extra protein and tones down the sweet.

And like everyone else says, hang in there! Day 5 I hit my breaking point. Today I'm 9 days out and in a much better head space!

I'm 3 1/2 weeks and still not making Protein goal. The Premier Protein like you said is way too sweet. I bought the liquid fruit punch with 20 oz protein... super sweet. Too bad there isn't a protein pill or patch. All I eat is aimed toward protein and sometimes I just have to force down half a shake to get more protein. I'm averaging 40 gm a day. Good luck.

I add six star unflavored Protein scoop to one cup of knorr boullion, it gives me creamy broth, 20 gms. of protein and great flavor. Find it at Walmart.< br>

Do you use the bouillon cube or ready made liquid? Looking for tolerable protein alternatives.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
