Can anybody help me in regards to how many carbs i should be getting in a day is it under 25 per meal or a day ??

I am averaging between 15-25g net carbs daily. Net carbs are total carbs minus the Fiber. Many people do well on a low carb Keto diet. I get most of my daily carbs from vegetables and the rest from dairy.

There's no hard and fast answer to this question. Different people have different tolerances to carbohydrates. Some can eat more than others without ill effects.

The dietitian at my bariatric surgeon's office never had me counting carbs, fat grams, or calories. I estimate I eat 150 grams of carbs per day, which would be considered a carb-controlled intake compared to the 300+ grams recommended per day by the U.S. government.

Total carbs - Fiber+ Sugar = Net Carbs... I am Type 2 Diabetic 5 years...I take my Metformin from a PEZ dispenser...I'm hoping my Sleeve August 10, will get rid of the type 2 altogether... I also plan on doing Keto diet when I'm back to real food...

As noted, there are no universal rules. For diabetics and the insulin resistant, carbohydrate restrictions have long been appropriate and you should be working with an RD for guidance; for those without those morbidities such restrictions are simply part of today's low carb diet fad and it's up to you whether you want to participate, but with the caloric restrictions imposed by our surgery, our diets are by default low carb and low fat, so there is little reason to worry about it.

Sugar is already included in the Total carbs, as is fiber. That is why you subtract the fiber. You don't add the sugar back, that would be counting it twice.

I was Type 2 as well, sleeved on June 16 and my AM fasting blood sugars have gone from 250+ to around 110. My endocrinologist took me off glipizide pre-op and my surgeon took me off Metformin post-op so I haven't taken any meds for a week or so now. I'm still in the liquid stage, so total carbs around 15-20 per day but I plan on staying as low-carb as possible when I move onto real food.

Good luck with your surgery! It's scheduled on my birthday so that's always a good day! 😀

On average I eat around 20 net carbs a day. Some days far less. With my thyroid issues etc it's the best way for me to eat. For me, the less carbs I eat the less I crave them. I was never picky about my carbs and what form they came in. Sugar? Yep! chips? Yep!Pasta? Yep! chocolate? Hell yep! Best for me to stay far away.

You'll have to decide if carbs are a slippery slope for you and obviously stay away from simple carbs and stick with complex if you do decide to eat more. Good luck.

I have thyroid issues also. I have Hasimottos. I feel really great on this low carb lifestyle. My fasting BS are usually 84-86. That never happened pre surgery even with my meds.

Yes, plus you can also subtract sugar alcohols, like xylitol and erythritol . I avoid those now, but consumed them right after surgery because they were in the Protein Powder i liked.

@ayanna_vsg - Are you wishing to follow a ketogenic diet? or just limit carbs? or are you counting as a tool to make sure you are following the doctors plan? or are you asking because you are on pre-op prep diet? different answers to each.

For the long term, I find that staying around the 50g mark is best for me. I am not currently in ketosis, but I avoid all white carbs because they trigger bad things, both in my body and in my head. I get carbs from fruit, veg, & Beans.

I was always counting Carbs the Atkins way....But after a little research I see there are several ways people are doing it...Some are only counting Total Carbs and that's it....Thank you Apple1 , I hope I have as much success as you in my Diabetic Surgery.

BT816 , So happy to hear this brother, my fasting BS is around 150 ....but It has always been highest in the morning...and will go down in the afternoon after I ate...and it's not just the medicine... I take 5mg glipizide ..without it the metformin does nothing..it never did. It seems like that all of a sudden this year I'm having control problems... but I am 5 years on metformin/glipizide..and it could just be the natural progression of things. I'm a Commercial Driver and Insulin is not a option. I have lost weight numerous times where at 225-228 I'm off all Medicine. I'm glad your doing so well. I went from being terrified of the IV... To terrified of waking up in pain of the Hernia repair/sleeve.

Per my nutritionist I keep my carbs between 50-100 grams a day. I drink a lot of milk so that does bump up my carb intake.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
