Conquering the sweet tooth

Hi,

I have been lurking in the forum for a while. So like many of you I'm in the process ( month 2 of 6 for Insurance pre qualification) of getting the sleeve. I want to try to set myself up for success by on the right path before I get the surgery. My ultimate down fall is my insatiable sweet tooth. Is anyone else working on this? Has anyone had success in beating this?

I have had success in the past with the hard knocks approach. Complete elimination off all forms sugar and sugar fruits. The first couple days are hard but after your body isn't getting it, it will stop craving it. Now I tell myself it's ok to crave it, just because you're thinking about food doesn't mean you have to have anything. Sometimes I think our, ppl with obesity as a disease, simply just think about food so much more and we think that we have to eat when we think about food. I don't know this logic works for me.

Thanks for the reply. I completely agree with you about obese people thinking about food more and thinking about eating. I will have to try your advice.

I have tried for years to get sugar out of my life, but it always seemed to sneak back in. A few months ago, I read a book called Never Binge Again, and it really really helped me. I think you can download it free from the website. (Just add a dot com to the end of the book title.)

Hi, I have actually read that book. It was helpful to a point, maybe I should have another go st it.

Not to worry, KK, it is part and parcel of why we gain so much weight. Long story short, we have all the gherlin being produced in our stomachs and you are fighting against your own body when you try to resist sweets. Instead of driving yourself mushugana, out of the world crazy, just practice delaying satiety of your cravings by 15 mins. The next time try 20 minutes. If it becomes impossible to ignore then grab a piece of fruit and some Water.

Look for the movie called "Hungry For Change" it's on Netflix. It is very inspiring and helps you look at food differently. It helped me to change how I saw good and sugar and has helped me in this battle. Sugar addiction is real. Once you find that one there are other movies that really help. The more you learn the more powerful you become against the sugar beast. Good luck!!!

Hi K_aane, I watched that documentary you recommended. It was good. I would definitely say that I'm a sugar addict. So far today I have eaten pretty clean. My worst part of the day is when I go home for dinner. I have this need to have my dinner and then eat something sweet regardless of the fact that I'm not hungry. I'm going to try to " white knuckle "it today and skip the sweets. Thanks!

Great Kim! I know it's hard because I struggle with it too. I have let myself have a sugar free cookie now and then so I dont struggle with the guilt of going off the,wagon. I am glad you liked the movie. [emoji4]

If you have to have something pair it w Protein to slow down the sugar entering your bloodstream. Like PB and apple, yogurt and berries, string cheese and a pear. Pick naturally occurring sugar.

After my surgery my sweet tooth turned into a salt tooth. I used to eat a lot of sugar.. like a lot. Since my surgery I could care less about anything sweet. Now I crave salty stuff like fritos .. chips. I never put salt on anything besides turkey before my surgery and now I put it on everything.

Brian B, how long ago did you have surgery? I'll tell you that my hope is that I will have the surgery and my tastebuds will crave more vegetables and less chocolate.< br>

Imho, the longer you go without refined sugars the easier it is. The cravings go away and it is easier to avoid it. Additionally, the longer you go without, the worse I feel if I do eat something sugary or heavy carb. I kept low carb before surgery and every once in a blue moon I'd get my fav sandwich from jimmy johns and some chips. Lord within 30 minutes I feel bad and it last for the rest of the day. Then I have to fight back the carb sugar cravings again. Usually not worth it. It does get better.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
