Biggest post op regret and best advice during honeymoon period

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I was sleeved June 6, 2017 and have been doing, obstensibly, very well. I'm one of the ones with absolutely no complications so far. I had next to no pain. I was walking on my own accord as soon as I woke up from surgery and have have no food toleration issues whatsoever. I've also lost 62 pounds, 35 post op as of day 17.

No regrets or mood swings at all so far. My concern, oddly enough is that everything seems to be going almost too well. I'm tracking calories and macros and consuming at least 60 grams Protein, at most 800 calories and at least 50% calories from protein. I'm also running already. I do however still have hunger and I've pretty much progressed myself through all foods ahead of schedule except solid cuts of meat and fresh veggies. (I originally planned on staying on liquid diet as long as possible but found I was downing Protein Shakes way to quickly and solid foods seems to pace better for me)

I really want to know what others have regretted most from their honeymoon period and what advice others can give on maximizing fat loss while maintaining or growing lean mass. I.e., trying to lose too quickly, exercising too little or too much, taking in too much or too little protein, not maximizing fat loss during this period, etc...

I would have to say that after almost two years out the only regret I have is that I did not do it sooner. As for advice, always try to stay focused on the fact that you are only going to get out of this weight loss tool what you put into it. If you strive for excellent results you have to do the hard work. That includes exercise and keeping your new dietary lifestyle on track. Will you have slip ups? sure everyone does, but what makes people successful is getting back on track and taking responsibility for the bumps you put in the road.

I`ll get of my soap box now

I was sleeved on May 15. My recovery has been very similar to yours. I am eating 800 calories a day with no problem most days. I have had zero issues with new foods. I haven't tried raw veggies yet. I am going to wait another couple of weeks.

I lost 18.5 pounds my first month post-op, and 22 pounds on my own before surgery.

You have asked a great question and I look forward to hearing every ones advice. I am curious on the macro percentages that work well for fat loss. I am currently averaging 30% protein 60% fat and 10% carbs.

The only regret I have from my honeymoon period is I started dating at 3 months which was a waste of time but it did not have a negative impact on my WL. It was just a bad choice overall. I wish I had started with DEXA scans and RMR testing earlier but honestly when I was in the 300s I would not have fit on the table. I barely fit when I started in the 200s. I feel like I knocked the food and tracking part out because it helped me change my relationship with food and it made post-op life easy mode.

As a super morbidly obese person, I did not need to add any lean mass. I already had more lean mass than most people (still do B)) so my only concern was losing fat while keeping my lean mass, which I did by exceeding my Dr Protein goals and keeping my protein at 90 or above from day 2. I am in the 120-130 grams of protein a day range right now. Working with a sports medicine team for my nutrition and fitness I think had yielded better results for me than following a WLS post-op plan, but that is a personal choice.

Oh I forgot at like 5 months I slowed my weight loss down on purpose because the month before I had lost like 20 pounds really fast, it happened all in like 10 days and it scared the hell out of me. That was a mistake, I should have just kept going the same way I was but, it was a lesson I needed to learn.

I don't think there is any losing too fast, it is better to let your body peel the weight off at the pace it wants. Your body is more in control than you are. It will take a break when it needs to, you don't have to build one.

To Outside: Thanks so much for the detailed response. How specifically has the DEXA and RMR helped you? It seems like a large expense and I'm not sure how exactly you incorporate it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
