How do I know if it's GERD?

Recommended Posts

I'm 25 days Post-Op and everything was going well until I reached soft foods. I keep experiencing minor heart burn/indigestion. I have had this things pre sleeve so I am familiar with the feeling however it seems to persist longer and longer each day. I am eating mild foods only and avoiding spice, citrus, and anything else known to give me heartburn but it seems that no matter what I eat it persists. Is this GERD or am I paranoid? It also seems that everything I eat lately (other than yogurt) has been leaving with me with a queasy feeling. Am I eating too quickly? Has anyone else experienced any of this? Thanks for your help!

Did you ever have a barium swallow done? Most definitely should have if you got WLS done in May, especially if you say you had GERD issues before surgery.

Also, can you specify as to what you're eating/drinking, how often, whether you're eating/drinking together, etc?

I did not have a barium swallow done. I didn't have GERD issues before surgery just minor heartburn/indigestion caused by what I was eating (which was basically fast food and other crap). I was just saying that I've experienced heartburn before so that's how I know what it feels like.

As far as what I eat now - I'm still in soft foods so eggs, fish, chicken (though I havent tolerated it well), yogurt, Jello, Soups, Protein Shakes, almond butter, string cheese, lean turkey lunch meat and sweet potatoes. That's about all I've got in rotation these days. I only drink Water or watered down gatorade G2. No eating and drinking together.

I plan to go to my doctor, I was just wondering if anyone else has had these experiences and if it turned out to be GERD

I hardly ever had heart burn before surgery but boy did I have it after. I had a swallow test and they found a small hiatal hernia. Certain types of foods actually still makes it play up but I can control it now.

Definitely speak to your surgeon about it. I had to be on omeprazole for about a month to sort it but eventually it has.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
