How do you get in all that fluid?

Recommended Posts

Hey, y'all!

I had surgery on June 1, 2017, and I'm doing great! I've lost 16 pounds since surgery and 29 pounds since I began my journey in August 2016.

Everything was smooth sailing until 12 days post-op, when I developed a sore throat. I went to my first post-op appointment on June 15, but didn't mention the sore throats because I thought it was sinus. I got the all clear and journeyed four hours home to Tennessee for a summer with my family. Long story short, I woke up June 16 with a horribly painful throat. I went to the doctor and found out I had strep. Well, after six days on an antibiotic, I'd had no real change except serious facial and dental pain. Went back to the doctor and got a shot of steroids, but the bigger problem was my low blood pressure - 94/62. After a few questions, (rapid heartbeat, dark urine, infrequent urination, sunken eyes) the doctor decided it was due to dehydration. She tried to give me an IV, but I was "so dry," that she ended up blowing two veins and not being able to hit a third.

so here is my question: How do you guys get in your 64 oz. of Fluid daily? I know you have to sip, sip, sip, and I am (I carry a water bottle with me everywhere), but it clearly isn't enough. What are your tips and tricks for upping your fluid intake?

Thank you for all your suggestions! I'll try anything to avoid a trip to the hospital.

I'm sorry you got sick right after surgery. that must be so hard, trying to recover from surgery and dealing with strep throat at the same time. I got dehydrated right after surgery too and had the same symptoms with the rapid heartbeat.

It was very scary. I got an IV in the surgeon's office and felt better immediately. After your doctor wasn't able to give you an IV, did she send you home? maybe at the ER, they would be able to get an IV in you?

Make sure the Water you are drinking isn't ice cold. cold water tastes better, but in the first few weeks, your stomach is super tiny and swollen from the surgery and the cold water can make it contract, giving you even less room.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
