New Job Opportunity

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this has been covered but I am curious to see if anyone had a dream job they always wanted to do and were able to finally go after that dream after surgery.

Well, not exactly what you wanted but since I had my surgery and lost the weight, I've been promoted 3 times, and now head up my department. So in a way Yes, this enabled me to do that. SO it has enabled me to be a lot better at what i do, and Others dont judge me the same.

I think there is often a subconscious reaction to the " fat guy or gal" that people do treat you differently. If not openly different then subconsciously for sure.

When you lose the weight etc, people see that as a sign of responsibility and change, and as a result, things happen.

I haven't applied to anything post op-- but I did get a significant promotion after losing weight-- and my annual increases post op are greater % than pre op...meanwhile the reviews themselves have remained consistent in scoring and comments...funnily enough I was working harder when I was heavier-- maybe bc I was less social then? Anyway it's not like we all didn't know there was a fat tax levied against heavy people... just glad I'm not being penalized anymore

I applied and was hired as a high school teacher for this fall! I'm three months post-op and am very nervous about shopping for new clothes when the time comes. Also, my department eats lunch together, so I'm wondering how that will work out.

I have to move to another state for this job, so I'll be alone for about 9 months before my family joins me. I'm so excited, scared, nervous, and happy!

Congratulations! A great opportunity for you. I'm also a teacher. We have 25 minutes for lunch and frequently br8ng things to share. IMe teachers are always dieting, sharing food, etc. If teachers eat together then I am sure you will encounter others who are careful of what they eat. Sometimes I only.have time for a Protein Shake. I went back to work six days after surgery and had a mini frig in my room that I stocked with food and Water. You're going to do great!

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I noticed during my tour of the school that three different teachers offered to share their healthy snacks; they are so kind and considerate.

A mini fridge is a great idea. I'm impressed that you were back to work so soon! It sounds like you have a great group of fellow teachers :)

This is an interesting topic. I'm having bypass in 3 weeks and in the last six months (since I have moved back to the UK from Australia) I have really sensed that I'm discriminated against thanks to my weight and image. I gained a lot of weight over the last 5 years (having a non-sleeping baby started it!) and went from happily overweight to constantly ill and highly restricted. In that period I've noticed people's attitudes toward me change markedly.

I work in the quite image conscious world of advertising and design. Before I left Australia I was Managing Director of a company and, I don't have to be modest here, have a pretty impressive resume. I've had interviews since then and, this has knocked my confidence badly, I know people are thinking 'he doesn't look like us' and 'he doesn't have the image we want to present to the world'. It's sapped my confidence and acted as a catalyst for getting on this train.

I'm not sure about a dream job now. I'm lucky enough to have a supportive wife and enough cash in the bank to take a few months off (after selling our house in Sydney). I'm giving myself some time to work on my health an happiness, have and recover from my operation and to properly spend time on researching and writing a novel.

It's good to hear that some of you chaps have found that your successful weight loss has also led to better work situations. It's bloody sad that we live in a world where that isn't a surprise but given what we've gone through and the efforts we make it's about time someone got a break!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
