Has anyone had a nutritional iv? A banana bag?

Recommended Posts

I came across some info on nutritional i.v & banana bags. If you had either one or both can you explain them to me. Also, why the doctor ordered it. The only understanding I got from what I read was if there was a deficiency and dehydration. I was wondering how bad do you have to be to get these. Seems like if they help feed the body Vitamins and the other hydrates it should be something we all should have?

These are general supplements, most commonly given to alcoholics in the ER. When bariatric patients need supplementation, they need custom nutrients based on their individual levels. A general one really won't suffice.

I understand about us needing bariatric Vitamins. I was asking the question if one gets so low in their Vitamin levels because of the malabsorption or a complication that could occur will they supply it for that need. I didnt mean to suggest the nutritional iv as a replacement to baratric vitamins I meant in a one day substitute of some sort to build vitamins back up

Right, and as a one day build-you-back-up thing, they still need to know what you are short on.. a custom banana bag, if you will.

But, usually they prefer to just get you to take more orally unless there is a life-threatening condition, severe depletion, and the like.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
