Decision between sleeve and bypass??

Recommended Posts

Good day all. I have been following this website for sometime and appreciate all the great info and discussion. I am at the point in my journey where I have been discussing which surgery would be best for me. It is between the sleeve and gastric by-pass. I am sitting on the fence. Any pros and cons anyone can pass along would be greatly appreciated. This is a harder decision than I thought it would be.

Thanks in advance

Lesley Q.

What does the surgeon recommend for you? I was fairly certain I wanted the sleeve and the surgeon said it was the right one for me... Sometimes it depends on the amount of weight you have to lose, perhaps not always

In my opinion, sleeve appears to be most common these days and has the lowest surgery risk. Bypass seems to be good if you suffer from reflux or want the dumping reaction in order to avoid sweets. DS seems to be recommended for higher BMIs and more extreme cases. I chose sleeve because I still want to be able to eat most foods normally once I hit goal, just in smaller quantities. If you haven't already, check out the obesity coverage website for lots of good info.

Thanks all. My surgeon has given me the final choice that's why I thought I'd ask "the experts". I to like the idea of eating regular food albeit in smaller amounts. All opinions gratefully accepted.

Exactly what he said [emoji1312][emoji1312][emoji1312]
The doctor that did mine rarely does bypasses anymore . Unless foe special cases of reflux issues, he said he thought sleeves were more effective- less changing of your body .

My husband had RNY - gastric bypass 11 years ago. Issues there are problems absorbing Vitamins and not being able to use Advil or nsaids. Also if you have any issues with liver/ bike ducts etc there's no access via egd. He had a lot of complications as well.
I had my vsg 6/22- so far so good.

Good luck with your decision. Trust your surgeon.

I'll add to to my prayer list! It will go well. There at so much fewer complications with the sleeve.

Best of luck to you. I had the sleeve and have had no complications, I can eat everything I did pre-op except for eggs and recovery wasn't bad.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
