Insurance Weight-loss Worries

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone:

I had my four-month weigh-in for my six-month long insurance required doctor-monitored diet. My insurer requires this before they will approve the RNY procedure, which is fairly common from what I have learned. Well, I ended up gaining three pounds, which put me a pound over my starting weight at my first weigh-in for this program. I am so frustrated because I really haven't been eating terribly and I have been exercising. My body literally clings to this weight like its life depends on it, which is why I am going through with the RNY in the first place. I wondered if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone was approved for the surgery even if they were a little over their starting weight. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I had a 6 month program and even though my a1c improved (I was following my diet and exercising), I put on weight fast!

I had gained 20 pounds out of nowhere 4 months in! My thyroid was checked during month 1, so they hadn't thought to check it again. (Not until I was close to the end and we figured out I have an underactive thyroid).

I got sick after month 4 and I ended up dropping 17 of the 20 pounds that I gained. But I still put on a few more pounds after the loss because I hadn't started my thyroid meds yet.

I came in at 239 and I was up to 246 at my last appointment before submission. (I wasn't 100% sure that they were going to submit me.
They were considering making me stay in the program longer to drop the weight).

They ended up submitting me anyway since my diabetic numbers improved drastically, they found that more important.

I got approved and then I lost 3 more pounds on my 2 week liver reduction diet.

Sorry this got so long. I guess my point is that it first depends on your surgeon/bariatric team and and how they feel about it. Also if there are certain other health issues going on.

Good luck!

I also had to do 6 month dr monitored diet. My brother died at the end of the 2nd month and I gained several pounds through grief eating. I eventually started to lose again, but had only lost a total of 6 pounds by the time it was submitted to insurance, and I was approved.

Sorry about your brother :(
My dad died during mine and I also gained weight. They let it slide because it wasn't too much.

Thank you, and I am sorry for your loss as well. It's slowly getting better, but initially was excruciating.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom six years ago, it completely changed me and shook me to my core. I can't even think about something happening to my brother or father without immediately feeling like I can't breathe. I didn't gain weight when I lost her, but I really gained weight when I quit smoking in January 2012.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
