2 days to surgery and I cheated

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am scheduled for Monday and I cheated. I had a couple bites of pizza and a taco

I have been extremely strict with myself and following my prepop diet to a tea. I don't know what came over me. I feel guilty and am worried for Monday now. I am Clear Liquids tomorrow. Will that be enough to undo what I ate?

It may make a difference. I actually went on liquids two days before surgery even though the Dr told me one. I was a bit paranoid. Stick to liquids from now til surgery and you'll probably be ok but be sure to let your surgeon know. It would be horrible if he got in there and couldn't do the surgery.

Your surgeon is, in all likelihood, performing the operation whether you adhere to your pre-op diet or not. Most surgeons wouldn't walk away from a $10,000 payday due to patient noncompliance.

Here's the kicker...if your liver is enlarged and in the way, the surgeon might not be able to perform your surgery laporascopically. He/she might have to perform an open surgery, which entails a large incision from your breastbone to the navel.

A laporascopic surgery with 5 tiny incisions involves faster healing and recovery than an open surgery with a huge incision.

@jessb25

While you will probably be okay for surgery, I recommend telling your surgeon exactly what you did. When a doctor is cutting into someone, it is extremely critical that he/she be in the know about everything.

And post-op, you simply won't be able to "cheat." That could mean life or death in the early days after the surgery.

I think it will be fine, but you need to seriously think about why you cheated. For the next year you will be following your surgeon's plan and you will find success. Don't sabotage yourself! Best of luck, this is your chance to become healthy.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
