Surgery day questions

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what they do right before surgery. Do they do another urinalysis, blood work, that kind of testing if you've already had it done a week before surgery? I've never had surgery before and just didn't know why I needed to be at the hospital 4 hours before my surgery. My surgery date is June 27th.

I had my surgery this past Wed. Thry did a urin test (pregnancy maybe) and blood..they said its a precaution, they do it to get your blood type. That was all I had.

Did you have previous blood work and a urinalysis for the medical/physical clearance?

Yes. The hospital I went to does alot precautionary "extras". I was glad though, it's better to be safe than sorry.

I had to argue with them about a pregnancy test. I haven't had a period in three years AND I'm a lesbian. I only had to be there two hours before and had all my preop blood work done the week before. Other than the pregnancy test I don't recall them doing any other tests, just the usual vitals.

I didn't need any pre op testing the morning of surgery. They did ask about pregnancy, but my tubes were tied about 17 years ago, so testing wasn't needed. I think it is just to be sure you are on time, registered, changed, and iv started whenever your doctor is ready. I did have to meet the anesthesiologist during the wait time. Good luck!

Yeah I was post menopausal and had my tubes tied and got a pregnancy test too.

The other reason you're there so early is in case the schedule changes. If the surgeries before you all to quickly, if someone backs out and cancels... they would rather have YOU sitting around waiting than the doctor and surgical personnel.

lol about the pregnancy test. They always do it even when you tell them you had a hysterectomy.

I had urine pregnancy test, got an IV put in with IV fluids, they gave me some cloths with a special soap and had me wash down from my breasts down my whole stomach(even though had to shower with special cleaner the night before and that morning). Then they did my blood pressure, I spoke with the anesthesiologist. Then waited.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
