Struggling with Pureed Food Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Hope I can get some suggestions. My surgery was this past Monday, June 12th. Doc says things went perfectly! I had the clear liquid diet for two days post opt and now I am supposed to be on pureed foods for two weeks. I am struggling. I am having to drink more Protein Shakes than I want otherwise I can get even to the 1/2 way goal of 78-90 grams of Protein a day. The Fluid intake - I will have to work up to 100 fl. ounces a day. I am getting to 60 but feel like I'm floating. Good news - type 2 diabetes is unbelievably in control. No meds since surgery and levels are great.

Had a bit of luck in the last few days. If anybody else is struggling with pureed food diet = here are some ideas.

1. Panara low fat chicken noodle Soup. Buy a bowl "to go" and strain out all the liquids. Then although it is tedious pick out the noodles. My hubby did this for me so I wouldn't be tempted. Take the remaining veggies and chicken and stock you drained and put into a blender. It makes a great pureed thick soup with wonderful flavor. I poured into 2.0-ounce containers for pre-made meals.

2. Went to taco bell and got 3 beef burritos with NO ONIONS. The plain burritos with no sour cream, no Beans, and no rice. Came home and scraped in inside of the burritos into the blender. After making into mash divided into 2.0 containers. Finally some beef and cheese with spices that had flavor!

3 Hubby took 3.0 ounces of the chocolate Premier Protein drink (Walmart) and mixed with 2 on of skim milk. Heated in the microwave and gave it to me in lieu of morning coffee. It was warm and tasted like hot cocoa.

4. Purchase Decaf tea bags - good old Lipton and make ice tea. Had a much easier day today getting my Fluid goal reached.

hope this helps others.

Julie

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
