How has your relationship with food changed?

Recommended Posts

Once in preparation for a department Christmas party we were told to write a complimentary word or phrase about each person in the department (anonymously). Someone compiled them and at the party each person was given the list of what people had said about them. For me, someone put down, "Survivor." It surprised me and puzzled me. But the more I thought about it, I thought it must have been written by one of my close friends. In retrospect, it is my favorite compliment of all time.

We're all survivors. We're fighters. We were handed some bad luck, but we never gave up. That's something to treasure.

Nancy

I sat alone crying and eating while another little girl sat cutting herself. I'll never understand why people have to be so lonely when there are others crying out for friendship. But there was food, inviting us in, comforting us, and stabbing us in the back at the same time.

Thank you all for sharing your stories about food. It helps to know that I am not alone. I didn't start gaining weight until I moved in with my husband in 1997. I was 175 then, and now....

I attribute it to the fact that I would eat more to feel as if I was getting my fair serving. He would eat so much more than me, and I had this feeling inside of me like he was going to eat it all up and now leave me any at all. So, I would eat even when I wasn't hungry so that I felt that I would have my share in the end. Even to this day, when I see him eating something I like...I worry if he will eat it all and there will not be any for me at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
