What is anaphylaxis? My sister had gastric bypass 10 years ago and became a raging alcoholic and chain smoker. I don't even know how she's still alive, she doesn't eat she just eats Gummy bears and drinks and smokes. I've put her in rehab 5 times but she always fails and she hardly drank before surgery.

I figured it might be something I try in advance at home where if I get sick I will be ok. I'm just so unsure. Waiting to speak to my surgeon now at my 3 month post op so I will have to see what he says!

Let us know what he said.
Definitely try at home first (assuming he gives the green light). That would be tragic to get sick on your big day!

Woohoo!! Doctor gave me the go ahead. Definitely suggested trying it out at home first and then make the judgement call on what I can tolerate for the wedding day!! I will have to start experimenting to see what matches with my new tastebuds!! (He stated that it helps that my progress is phenomenal! 62% of my excess weight lost in just 3 months!)

A few times a month I will have a glass of wine or part of a light beer. Alcohol hits me hard and therefore I don;t have much. With wine I can drink a glass over a period of time, beer I don;t even drink a full glass before I fill full.

Since everyone's body is different my surgeon suggested giving some red wine a try first at home. I had a 4 oz glass over a period of an hour last night with no reaction and I didn't feel drunk. He says wine is the better option!

I have had the surgery approximately 2 years ago and I have gained 13.8 labs and I am starting to become a little worried I did not go back to the Post Op classes after my surgery as I was sealing with my oldest Brother's just two months prior to the surgery but proud of my decision to go ahead with the surgery. l am feeling full of gas that is not moving and not sure how to relieve the pain should I drink more Water?

Vam

I have been wondering about alcohol as well! I am getting married in 4.5 weeks and want to have some wine with the toasts or even a few sips of my favorite apple crown with the wedding party on the way to the reception! At that point I will be a little over 4 months post op. I have my 3 month post op appointment today but I know if I mention it to my surgeon he will tell me no as he is against drinking after bypass! I just want to Celebrate a little nothing crazy!!

Discussed ad nauseam:

You'll find both sides of the argument explored and talked about in agonizing detail and breathtaking recklessness.

I agree with you. That's my experience. I got to a point that alcohol wasn't affecting me. That was dangerous. I'm still learning to deal with that. Alcoholism among weight-loss patients is a very real danger. Good luck!

I have never been a big drinker nor will I ever be! I'm not concerned about alcoholism bc I do not have an addictive personality. I was never a food addict, my WLS was due to other medical issues. A drink every now and again will be fine just as before.

I had half a glass of red wine over a couple hours Saturday evening and I found my tolerance to be about the same as it was prior to surgery. I don't drink often but a half glass of wine is still a comfortable drink for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
