Welp! 1 week post-op tomorrow and it looks like I just had my emotional breakdown...

Recommended Posts

I've read so much by now that I should have expected this, however maybe it's one of those things you think will "not happen to me". I'll be one week post-op tomorrow and I'm having a hard time getting my shakes, calories and Protein in. My whole body aches and I just feel bad in general. Follow up appointment is tomorrow, so here's to hoping I'm not alone! Thanks for listening.

How much of each are you getting in? I feel so much better since upping my calories some. Hopefully they'll have some suggestions for you. Are you from New England by any chance? I rarely see anyone saying welp that isn't. :)

Today I finished one Premier Protein, so that's 30 g Protein and 160 cal. And I've managed to try and sip on propel Water but haven't finished a 20oz bottle yet. Am also getting small amount of Gatorade down. I can't wait until the following Tuesday when I can begin the pureed stage! And I'm actually from NY originally, then PA and now I'm in South Carolina lol.

I had a really hard time getting enough calories or liquids during that first 1-2 week period as well. That plus the major shock that your body has undergone is enough to put anyone on an emotional roller coaster. I was exhausted as well. But now it's almost 8 weeks out and I have energy to burn, so it definitely takes time but gets better. Just give yourself some non-food TLC and extra self-compassion - you've been through a lot!

No wonder you're emotional. That's so little. What's preventing you from drinking more? Pain?
I could get in around 40 ounces of liquids the first week but my NUT was ok with that. Keep trying. It gets better!

I felt pretty bad my first two weeks, and I struggled the same as you. Starting week 3 I started feeling a lot better. My surgery was 5/23 and I was finally able to hit my Protein and Water goal just 3 days ago. And only able to get all my Vitamin supplements in the day before yesterday. Just hang in there...it WILL get better, a little bit each day.

I will be one week out on Thursday and I am struggling like you, I feel overly emotional, helpless (I'm normally a very in charge person) and weak. For me it's pain making me unable to get all my fluids of all kinds in. It's mostly left side pain, Has anyone else experienced this in the beginning of post op???

I lost it the 2nd day, 2x's the first week, once the 2nd week and once the 3rd week when I went back to work. I was told to expect "buyers remorse". So when it hit, I lost it, scared my family and then moved on cause I knew it was pretty much normal. I'm 2 days shy of 8 weeks post op and I have to say, it's much easier to drink and eat now. I still don't get the full 64oz of Water but I get between 50 and 60 and my surgeon said that is good. She said it will increase as time goes on.

I hurt on my left side for 5 weeks or so. Surgeon said that's because she did more on that side and the 2 incisions are larger than the one on my right side. My stomach was removed through the incision by my belly button.

I am 11 days post op, and I am a New Yorker about to be transplanted in SC next month!

first week or two sucks. Focus first on getting your water/liquids since not making that goal will make you hungry/miserable/thirsty. THen worry about getting foodstuffs in. I could barely eat anything that week.

I remember the day I broke down in my endocrine specialists office 3 weeks post surgery. The nurse thrust my meter into my face and asked why I had elevated numbers. I just told her I was still working on my Protein Shake from the morning, that I'm struggling, etc. She just kind of sugar shamed me without listening to me and I lost it. I started crying, and I didn't stop for 5 days. I'm not kidding. And when it was over I was ready to start this thing for real.

Blink, blink.

Medical professionals can be so clueless :(

To the OP.. keep trying different fluids. Warm herbal tea worked really well for me. All those artificially flavored drinks were the pits...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
