Question on Stomach Pain

Recommended Posts

Last night, I had really bad stomach pain. It felt like someone had punched me in the stomach or was squeezing my stomach. It was two to three inches below my sternum right in the center. It felt strange to breathe. The pain would be strong, then lighten a little, then be strong again. I finally fell back asleep. This morning I just feel a slight ache.

Although I've had no acid in my throat that would indicate reflux, could this be caused by acid reflux, just not coming all the way up? Or would this happen if one of my Vitamins got stuck? (I take two vitamins every night and never had any problems so far with them getting stuck)

I have my regular appointment to see my surgeon in two weeks, and I don't want to go in early if I don't have to. Is this anything to be concerned about if it happens again? I figured as long as I can get food and fluids through and tolerate any pain, I can wait it out the two weeks.

In case it's relevant, for dinner that evening, I had eaten stir fried vegetables with some chicken breast and about one or two bites of white rice. I didn't feel any pain or feel anything stuck. Then two hours after that, I had my Protein Drink, then two or three hours after that, I went to bed.

Sounds like the Vitamin to me, especially since it's pretty much gone today. I always took my daily pills before bed, but now have tried to switch to am, to avoid the problems you dealt with last night.

Thanks. :) I can't take them in the morning because I have to drink this really awful cholysteramine every morning, which is a result of having my gallbladder removed. If I don't drink it, I have a "dumping" problem. The drink absorbs most of the Vitamins and nutrients in my system for several hours, so they recommend witing at least five before taking any Vitamins. I guess I could try to take the vitamins in the evening sometime, but I just remember better before bed.

Someone said something about liquid vitamins. Are they at GNC? Do they taste really icky? These vitamins I'm taking are like horsepills.

Read the message by Penni about liquid vitamins in General Discussion. I got a bottle and 1 quick gulp and you're done for the day. No after taste, it's yuky looking green, but a citrus taste that's gone by the time you put the bottle back in the fridge.

Violet,

I used to do the horsepills too but they bothered me, not to mention made my pee turn bright orange :)....anyway I recommend the liquid Vitamins or they even have spray Vitamins which I use and love...it's called Vitamist and think you can pick it up anywhere...8 sprays a day and your done...comes in a month supply...check out http://vitamist.com if your interested....

Katie, I tried the spray Vitamins and the smell came through my pores and would last all day, plus you have to spray numerous times per day. Again, this particular liquid Vitamin is a 1 gulp a day and done. The spray may work for others as well, maybe I'm just over sensitive.

One other thing...do you still have your gall bladder. That is where I had my gall bladder pain and it almost always happened at night with horrible pain and the feeling of horrible gas that wasn't there...maybe look into that if there are any more problems...I hope you're feeling better now!

Ladies, in her second post in this thread Violet mentioned that she had her gallbladder removed. Must be something else -- hope it's just the giant Vitamins or ordinary flu.

Hi guys! Boy Zoe, you have an excellent memory. Wish I could borrow it ;)

Yes, I had my gallbladder out years ago, which I believe was also related to weight loss.

I didn't have this feeling again or get sick the next day so maybe it was just the pills. I have been chopping them in half now before swallowing. They are very high dose Vitamins and really seem to be helping with my hair loss (it's slowed down significantly) so I am hesitant to switch...kind of like a baseball player who doesn't want to change his socks after a winning game!

I didn't know things getting stuck could feel that bad though. That was awful.

A good memory? You must be joking -- my brain is a big hunk of Swiss cheese! All I did was read the posts. . . Violet, glad to hear the problem has resolved itself, and that your hair is staying where it belongs.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
