Is it normal to wait this long for a date?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! My insurance officially approved my VSG on 5/26. When I didn't hear anything from my surgeon's coordinator, I emailed her and asked when I should be expecting to discuss a date. She told me that she would contact me early next week (6/19) at the earliest.

This was incredibly discouraging to me as I will start law school in mid-August and want a few days to recover before going (I'm 22 and don't expect and prolonged recovery). I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience or if this is quite odd. Thank you!

It is odd. I called my coordinator and told I need a date on a specific week because I had commitments. She gave me the date I wanted.

You are paying them thousands. Call and make them give you want you want. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Once I was approved, we scheduled the surgery the next day. There was about a month in between scheduling the surgery and it actually happening, but they scheduled me in the first available slot.

Like @OutsideMatchInside said, I'd call them and pester them until they lock in a date for you. These practices want the revenue, so I am surprised that they are not all over it anyway...

Thank you for confirming what I was thinking! No one I know personally has had the surgery so I didn't want to think this was strange and then have it be normal.

It surprised me too! I had to be the first one to reach out to even know that I was on their radar and that left a bad taste in my mouth to begin with. Thanks for the advice!

The bariatric team Dr. approved me for surgery 05/10/17. She said she said she would have the coordinator call me to set up the appointment with the surgeon. I received the call from the coordinator on 05-31-17. I'm now scheduled with the surgeon for 06-16-17. I am supposed to receive a surgery date on that day. They are booking surgeries a month out. I guess some places take longer than others.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
