Clothes for hospital and recovery?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what people would recommend for clothes in hospital and during recovery? I know loose clothes. But how loose? All my short or pants waistbands go to my belly button or are tight against my stomach. Would dresses be ok?

Most YouTube videos I've seen of "what's in my hospital bag" have bath or house robes or strapless flowy dresses.

Anything that won't touch or irritate the surgical sites.

I wore very loose sweat pants and wore them a little lower. A lot there were just wearing the hospital gowns or night gowns with robes.

I wore loose sweatpants and a cami as soon as they said it was fine to do so. I just didn't let the sweatpants touch my stomach despite it being loose.

I wore loose yoga pants or pj pants that went to my belly button. My incisions were all above my belly button pretty much. I had one kind of close to my waistband and on days it was bothering me I just pushed my waistband down below my lower belly. If you're going to do that I highly recommend longer shirts :) Loose dresses would be totally fine also though. I also bought several really stretchy wireless bras (the kind that just pull over your head) and those were much needed. I don't feel comfortable going with no support at all and those were good because I had one incision right at my bra line that got really irritated if I tried to wear anything with wire...

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
