Hi.

I am going in for my sleeve surgery on Wednesday, my emotions have gone everywhere from excitement, to fear, to wanting to cancel to knowing this is my last chance at a normal life. I am mostly afraid of complications, but lately my mind has been on the future. I am on my pre-op diet this week (strictly meat and veggies) I don't eat much of either, I am wondering how I'm going to do if that is all I can have. I think adding yogurt, cheese and other dairy products in will be a big help. Did anyone else eat very little meats n veggies before surgery? I am ready to make changes, and I'm hoping that with some practice, I can learn to eat the foods I need to. I have lost 10lbs so far on my pre-op, I have not cheated once!

Congrats on taking the next step! Everyone has wide arrays of emotions before surgery, and I can say after four months that my new 'normal' feels as comfortable as my old 'normal' did. Regarding the meat and veggies, as long as you make it a priority to get as much Protein in as possible after surgery you should be fine. There are other sources of protein instead of meat including vegan if that is what you prefer. Enjoy the healthier you and best of luck with your surgery!!

I think the main take away in terms of eating post op, is to make healthier choices, focus on nutrition, and not let yourself slip into the same bad habits that got us to our obese stage in the first place. My nutritionist says she doesn't expect you to never eat Doritos again. But if you say, I had a small bag of Doritos yesterday with my lunch, but I ate my Protein first. That's better than not having any protein at all. Although we know we don't want to make that a new habit.

I think I'm playing a mental game with myself right now. I KNOW it's going to be hard. I guess I'm just hopibg there are healthy ways I can eat my favorite foods. I will eventually like to make cauliflower crust pizza and i'm not sure how to make healthy Pasta lol. Thank you for your response!

Can we do a Paleo diet in terms of carbs? I have saved some Paleo recipes I was thinking of trying down the road.
Thank you

I'm not too terribly familiar with Paleo. Ask your surgeon about what they think.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
