Where are my fellow Oregonians?

Recommended Posts

I live in SE Portland Marieze. I too have finished all the appointments and sleep study, and I'm wating to schedule my pre-surgery consult. I originally requested Emma Patterson but I really don't have a preference as far as what surgeon. I may go to Dr. Jay Jan, as he may be available before Emma.

I'm getting my surgery done at Southwest Washington Med. Center because I am self pay and I'm saving like 5K by doing it there.

When did you finish all your pre-op appointments? I'm surprised you have to wait till the end of Dec. just for your consult. That makes me think I am further out that I thought. :scared: Are you self pay, or is insurance paying for it?

I live in Lake Oswego so we are neighbors!! My insurance, United Healthcare is paying 90%. I'm very lucky and have very good insurance! I went to the seminar on Tues. 8/21. I had my first set of appts. Thr. 10/18 and the second set Tues. 10/23. They then called about 2 or 3 weeks later and scheduled the appt. for that Thr. 12/27.

They told me that I could have come for a consult with Dr. Jan this week. After the surgical consult, they send the file to insurance and when they get a reply, thats when they schedule the actual surgery.

Well, they said that Dr. Jan was going to be off work on vacation the last 2 weeks of Dec. and the 1st two weeks of Jan. I figured that Patterson was my 1st choice so at that point I figured it would be about the same timewise.

Being that you are a self-pay, you could skip that who insurance authorization process. Have you called them, I really think you should be in their face and push for your consult/surgery date.

Marie

Technically, I live in WA, but I consider myself an Oregonian. I'm 45 minutes from Portland. But, I was born and raised in Oregon. North Bend/Coos Bay area. I'm coming up on 2 years banded. I've lost 94 lbs. I'm 15 lbs. from goal. In Sept, my husband and I ran the prefontaine memorial 10K run in Coos Bay. It's good to see others from the same area on LBT.

Thanks for the info! I had my entire strew of appointments on 10/10, and did my sleep study 11/2, so you can imagine I'm a little frustrated that I haven't heard from OWLS about my pre-surgical consult. I don't know about you but I've had a heck of a time with OWLS/SWMC.

I actually lived in Lake Oswego my early teens and high school, I went to Lakeridge! :)

Thanks for the info, KIT.

Hi there!

Yes the Pre is quite an event here. Where did you have your surgery? I can't believe how many people drive from really far away to go to Dr. Tersigni.

I just found out he is raising his prices after the first of the year. I find that

very disappointing. I had a feeling that would be coming now that he got

approved to be a "center of excellence"

I just moved to Oregon a little over a month ago. I'm living in Aloha. :)

Sarah, I didn't know you were living in Oregon! That is way cool. where did you move from?

I moved here in the beginning of October from Southern California. The weather is a big change and my husband doesn't understand why I want a WINTER WARDROBE! Although this morning he finally admitted to being cold, so maybe he'll figure it out. He's from Washington initially so this is more what he's used to.

Marimaru-

I'm glad to know you are from Oregon and around my age! I haven't been able to connect with any one my own age locally, so it would be great if you would like to get together at some point!

I live in SE Portland. PM me and we can exchange emails or something if you would like!

Sarah, I feel bad for you. It's so nice in Southern CA. The weather in Oregon really stinks sometimes. It's a lot warmer in Portland though in the summer than it is where I live.

If I ever get to Portland area, I would love to meet you too. It's Aloha near Portland?

There was a bunch of reasons to move up here. It is rather cold, but that's okay.

Aloha is near Beaverton... I think it's a tiny suburb of some kind, lol.

Since this is an Oregon thread, can anyone tell me the name of some good local surgeons and whether you know if they'll deal with Mexico patients? I don't have any issues but it's been too long since I had my band checked out (don't need a fill), and I should really just get a checkup and I think it would be good to know a surgeon before I need one, if that makes any sense.

Kelly Fitzpatrick does fills but I think she is a nurse practitioner.

She is in Portland. A lot of people from Portland go to my doctor.

He's good about seeing people who got their surgeries in Mexico.

It's 4 hours though.

Maybe Jack knows someone closer for you.

Jack, are you calling Coos Bay the jaws of hell? Not that I care. It really is the pitts living here. And what does OV stand for?

I know there are a lot of people who have had their surgery in Portland, I am just not sure if they will take on someone who had their surgery in Mexico.

Or are you referring to the merry town of Portland? LOL I hate driving into downtown...

Sarah welcome I'm familiar with Aloha, i'm in the Bethany/185th Ave area...I hope you enjoy our bea-u-ti-ful weather here lately, personally i'm a little chilly right now and pulling out my winter clothes too! Enjoy!

I got to Kelly Fitzpatrick for fills, I really like her, but do not have a local surgeon as of yet, I figured I would have to hop a plane to San Diego if I have any complications but mostly just do my best to ensure I do not have any.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
