Favorites for each phase

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

What were some of your favorite foods on each phase after surgery? I'm having surgery 6/19 and have ideas from my dietitian and the booklet the WL clinic gave me, but would like to hear from you guys too! I feel that this could be helpful to all pre-opers out there.

Full liquid phase, purée phase, soft food phase and regular diet ideas please!

Preop: Premier Protein shakes. I still drink them, but my tastes changed after surgery and I don't like how they taste as much anymore.

Clear liquids: Isopure Protein Water, Prostat protein Syrup, Jello (hated jello preop)

Full liquids: cream of mushroom Soup blended. Tomato Soup (another food I never liked preop)

Puree/soft foods: cottage cheese, isopure unflavored Protein Powder (mix this into anything that doesn't have that many grams of protein), oikos triple zero yogurt, mashed potatoes and mased sweet potatoes with protein powder added, fat free refried Beans, still eat soup on the regular with protein powder mixed in.

Post op taste changes: Can't tolerate extremely sweet foods. I used to have a major sweet tooth but gagged when I tried some sugar-free chocolate syrup post-op. I also get queasy from plain water and need flavor enhancers. Pre-op I drank 2L of plain room temp water. Now, it has to be cold and I started using Trulemon water flavorers (don't like mio).

My advice is get creative. I looked at the list if possibilities and then bought unflavored Unjury. My go to that I still live is chocolate pudding. Made it with a premixed Premier Protein shake(30 g. of Protein in 11 oz) and added fair life milk to get it up two two cups of liquid called for on box. Then added two scoops of unflavored injury as well with the pudding mix. I got 5 servings (4 oz) they were 100 calories and 15 grams if protein.(according to the myfitnesspal app) I would change up the flavor of shake(carmel or banana is really good too)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
