Sleeved today, staff driving me nuts

Recommended Posts

Hi! That was probably the worst part about the night stay at the hospital. All I wanted to do was go home and sleep in my own bed. It was the longest night of my life.

They're all very nice and professional, but could they please schedule their visits together? All night long it seems like someone is coming in every 45 minutes for something different. How's a guy supposed to sleep?

Right! Seemed like I just be dozing off and KNOCK KNOCK. I know it's their job but it's why I couldn't wait to go home. Plus it's a teaching hospital and I had the weirdest student who just sort of hung around and talked about inappropriate things. Awkward!
Hope you get to go home soon so you can get some rest.

No kidding, that was pretty annoying but understand it, however, I was freaked out about not walking so I just made a point walk every time they took my vitals! What annoyed me more was all the beeping and flashing lights of the machines!

Didn't get any sleep but I was in only 1 night so not terrible. Glad that's over though :)

Sorry, dude, but that's how it goes! [smile] The hard-working nurses and ancillary staff (respiratory therapists, etc) have many patients to care for all hours of the night. God bless them.

You'll survive the sleep interruptions and will have plenty of time when your return to your own bed. Better that they check on you as needed (or ordered), instead of leaving you there unattended, and you were having a complication, fever, bleeding, etc.

Be grateful for the process. You'll get more sleep at home. :-)

The staff wasn't so bad during my stay the night of my surgery I was very groggy and tired but the elderly patients I guess were confused kept setting off bed exit alarms all night it was horrible.

My RN checked on me every 2 hours. The nurse tech/assistant checked on me every two hours. But as you say...they weren't coordinated. So every hour someone was coming in. At some point the RN came in and I was sound asleep so he decided to let me sleep and came back an hour later when the tech was there too. This was around 5 am. Problem was that I had pills to take every 4 hours when I got home so it was about a week until I finished those and I finally got to sleep a whole night.

Our hospital requires the nurses and nursing assistants to round on patient hourly from 7am to 11pm and then every 2 hours during the night. They alternate so one hour the NA comes in and the next hour the RN comes in. I was used to it from having the same routine when I was in for the birth of my kids, 4 days with my daughter of this.

Also while I was in I had a roommate the first night and she was having some issues. She had had thyroid surgery and wasn't able to speak and was having breathing issues so they were in all night checking on her, doing tests, having the on-call physician and Respiratory therapist check her, having the speech therapist in and then she had to get breathing treatments every 2 hours. It was awful.

I had the same complaints. Luckily I had an awesome nurse who I begged to leave me alone for 3 hours to sleep and he coordinated it so all the assistants and such left me alone for 3 glorious hours of sleep.

I guess I shouldn't have complained, I was fortunate to have a private room and they kept the door shut.

thats better than i had, i layed in the room 7 hours before i got a sip of Water, then it was hell to get anyone to unhook me to use the restroom, or walk, sometimes waiting 45 minutes after i hit the call button

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
