Anyone else having trouble with the vitamin supplements?

Recommended Posts

Hi, all,

My VSG was on 5/23. I'm finally feeling like I can make it (pain was intense the first 10 days or so). I'm doing well except I can't get all my Vitamins in. I am supposed to take a sublingual B12 (which I am good with). Also 2 huge chewable Multivitamins (doing better with these now that I crush them and put in applesauce) and 2 chewable calciums. The Calcium makes me want to barf.

I still am am not quite up to where I need to be on my Protein, but getting better. I feel like I have a new full-time job of taking vitamins. LOL!

I'm glad I've had the surgery though. I know my life& my health are going to be so much better.

I had the same thing...but got rid of the chewable multi's and am trying the Patches. I couldn't stomach the chewables anymore. B12 is good for me too and I take three calcium chews (bariatric advantages) they taste good. One thing that helps me immensely, thanks to @Thejeweledsleeve, is the Round app. My phone dings when it's time for Vitamins. So, I'm not having to think about them really. Might be worth checking in to for yourself.

Try to find a way to get the Vitamins in... I am about 11 weeks out and just had my levels checked and all my Vitamin levels are good. The only low level I have in all my post op blood work is Iron and I am not going to take iron supplements since they are so constipating. Anyhow, I am lucky, I take my vitamins the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach without an issue. I chew Centrum orange flavored chewables Multivitamin, a chewable Vitamin D, a sublingual B12 and a Calcium wafer (citrus flavored). In the beginning I hated the calcium wafer but now I am used to the taste.. I have them all in one of those daily pill boxes right on my kitchen counter. I never took vitamins before the sleeve and now take them every day without fail. I think they are an acquired taste

I also find it difficult to take the Vitamins but deficiency is a real deal so we need to figure it out. For Calcium I take the Celebrate chewable, berry is the best, chocolate kind of tastes like dirt to me.

Chewable Multivitamin makes my throat burn so I just do a pill. I've just gotten on a schedule AM is X, lunch is Y and Bedtime is Z.

Good luck!

I'm having a very bad issue with Vitamins as well. My DR office has a chewable multivitamin with everything in it except the last 3 days I've thrown them up? Now I can't even smell it without wanting to puke. Can anyone provide me with some information about these Patches? Thanks!

I had surgery on 5/22 and I found this awesome new product call Tespo Vitamins. It's like a mini keurig for vitamins. They have a bariatric one for bariatric patients. It's a powder form and you add Water to the tank. Has a shot size glass that is it comes with a cup. You put the wheel in the machine it mixes it for your with water and you drink it. It tastes like Tang and is totally tolerable. It's easy to use, buy and I absolutely love it!! My husband had the sleeve surgery too and we both are on it. He started with the chewables and hated it but loves the Tespo.

I bought the Bariatric Fusion Vitamins and took them before surgery with no problem but after surgery - uh uh, they made me want to puke. I switched to Flintstone chewables and have no problem with them. Take 2 a day. And the B12 sublingual.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
