Recommended Posts

I think it is normal to feel scared some what. This is something we have not been thru. I have been overweight my entire life, so although the change will be good, it is still change.

Yes. Thank you for your response. My current weight is 352lbs, with a BMI of 61.5. I am planning to have my gastric sleeve soo. However, I heard a lot of post-op complications such as: blood clots, vomiting, anemia, blood pressure ect. That is why I am scared.

Just found out today that Cigna approved my surgery and we scheduled it for August 16th.
I am so ready.

Congrats! They submitted mine on the 21nd and I received a letter yesterday that they asked Dr for more information. I called doctor today and they said they already submitted. Fingers crossed!

I'm starting to make a shopping list for the pre-op and post-op diet. My surgeon is having me on a liquid diet for two weeks before and after. Anyone else have the same diet plan for a month? Any suggestions on what your stocking up on for Aug?

I'll be on a liquid diet for two weeks before and then up to day 20 post op. I'll be stocking up on Jello, SF pudding, yogurt, Crystal light, Protein Shakes and SF popsicles. I also bought the clear premier fruit punch drink and a Protein broth powder (haven't tried either yet) and am trying to find an unflavored Protein Powder. And even though I don't like it, I bought some unsweetened applesauce.

Hello briski, yeah I think ill be doing a lot of those options for after the surgery. But from my understanding, Jello, pudding, and popsicles don't count as part of the liquid diet. So I won't be able to use them pre-op :/

Just curious as to everyone's starting weight and how much if any you needed to lose before surgery.

That stinks. I know I can't have pudding pre op but I can have everything post, except for the day before surgery and days 1-6, which are Clear Liquids only.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
