I have a serious but kind of gross question!

Recommended Posts

Amy, I'm having the same issues. I was banded on Friday the 5th and trying to go to the bathroom is terrible. After reading these threads I'm going to the drug store and get some if not all of the suggestions! I hurt!

I know exactly what you went through, I didn't go to the bathroom for about a week after surgery. I asked my doctor at my one week check-up if I should just wait for it like Christmas (cause eventually it comes) or try to do something about it. He suggested taking a mild laxative whenever I thought it was necessary. Things worked themselves out sooner or later and I haven't had any trouble since. I'm not what I would consider regular yet but that is probably due to the fact that I am taking in so much less food than I was prior to sugery and there is bound to be less "output" than before. I've found that milk of magnesia works wonders whenever I need it.

It took me 5 days to go post-op with the help of Milk of Magnesia (recommended by my doctor). He also said no Fiber drinks or Fiber Cereal in the pouch (could stretch it).

You'll also have to get used to the small quanitity that comes out, as well as ummmm.... the consistancy. And it's totally normal to not go everytime you eat.

been there, done that!!!! I aslo tout milk of mag!! colace is also good--an senacot--all have been mentioned, however the problem does persist!! I am 15 months out and still sometimes have this problem. So I cal the Rear Admiral (the gastro man) and he told me either to use sugar free citracel EVERY day or a colace EVERY day. once when I had not gone for 6 days I used a supository with no results and then some milk of mag--won't do that again...almost didn't make it to the bathroom!! so whatever you do do it on a consistent basis and you won't have those problems--its not just for newbies, I SWEAR!! ....and good luck!!

:update:

Milk of magesia is my new best friend! There was no cramping, and no stomach churning. Best of all it was a complete success. This message board is so WONDERFUL! I can't thank everyone enough!

Lauren - I can't speak for all, but I had the same issue. Still do sometimes! I was banded on Sept 13th and have went from giving birth to showering the bathroom down. I had a little bit of extra laundry for a while! haha I can appreciate the gross out part, but it is a fact of life. The gas will subside, but certain foods might cause it to flair up again. Hang in there and just know that it will get better in many respects!

ohh...my....hehehehe

well i am 21 days post op and stil on ruddy Soups etc my doc makes you have the fluids for 4 weeks.....so i got creative to avoid this sort of thing by blitzing 4 or 5 tablespoons of baked Beans in tomatoe Soup once a day....it liquidises really easily and hey presto you have the fibre you so badly need.....

also for brekkie i have some soupy porridge which is also fibre.....so maybe that idea might help out a bit...worth a try for you

Yep...I had the same problem. It was HORRIBLE! I was in such pain I called my husband home from work...I though I was going to have to go to the emergency room. We called the DR's Office and they told me to take Milk of Magnesia. That took about 30-40 minutes to work and then it was much better. It was from the pain meds.:angry

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
