Fasting and liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Salams!
I'm wondering why my doctor doesnt have me starting the liquid pre-op diet earlier. My surgery date is June 28, and I was told to start it June 21, so one week before.

Walaikum Asalam

Pre-op diets vary from provider to provider, and are generally based on the type of surgery you're having and your overall health (I believe).

Some surgeons require 2 weeks, some require 1. Some don't even have a "pre-op" diet other than full liquids the day before surgery.

But when are you getting your Water in?

My surgeon expects me to get 64+ ounces of Water in daily... I can't imagine doing that before suhoor and after iftaar.

I feel guilty... But I truly don't think I'd be able to get into ketosis unless I followed the diet my nutritionist/ surgeon provided.

I'm based in New Zealand and we're fasting slightly less than 12 hours and its been relatively easy here to get the water in as from 5:15 pm til 5:45 am I am able to drink water. So I have a glass every hour until ten and I have two when I get up in morning with shake before starting fast.

Fat free doesn't necessarily mean sugar free.

Your BMI provably isn't that high. I didn't do any liquid diet pre-op. They request it to shrink the size of your liver so it's easier to do the operation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
