SOOOOO over protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I'm 9 days post op and I am literally having to force down my Protein Shakes at this point. It's not that my stomach can't tolerate them, it's that between my pre-op diet and now having to drink them again just the thought of a Protein Shake is making me want to gag. I have never been a fan of sweet drinks and it seems like each one is sweeter than the last. Does anyone have any suggestions about how else to get my Protein?

Thanks!

I'm gonna preface this by noting that a lot of people will probably disagree with me about this, but Isopure Zero Carb really works for me. A 20 oz bottle has 40 g of Protein. They are not overly sweet. I pour it in a big tumbler with LOTS of ice and I find sipping it far preferable to sticky sweet Protein Drinks. They sell it at GNC. I like the coconut and lemon tea flavors.

Fair warning, a lot of people find it absolutely disgusting but it works for me.

Thanks so much - I will try anything at this point!

Check out herbox sodium free broth packets. They were a life saver for me. No salt, 10 calories. They breakup the monotony of the shakes.

I can remember that phase all to well. I felt exactly like you. After 2 weeks pre-op then 3 weeks post op, I wanted to gag and cry everytime I had to drink a shake. The good news is you're almost through it and are well on your way to other stuff. I really, really missed salty and savory, and I hated the sweetness. I agree with the previous post, try a little bowl of warm broth in-between shake meals. The saltiness does break up the monotony of the sweet shakes.

Make your own with veggie powder vanilla with yogurt and milk and maybe a cou0le small pieces fruit. That's what I do in the morning so I get Protein Water and some calories.

Good advice on the isopures, I've used them to get additional liquids and my Protein. I don't think they taste very good but there are tons of flavors so get a few different ones. Also, i think ordering online is cheaper and a better selection. Some times GNC has them on clearance.

Fortunately, I love the Protein Drinks, Premier Vanilla is my favorite.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
