Is there anyone with BiPolar 2 and had the gastric sleeve surgery?

Recommended Posts

Been dealing with BP2 for decades. Some of the meds made me gain a lot of weight. That was one of the reasons I chose the gastric sleeve. 27 months in I'm at goal and maintaining. I'm no longer grappling with diabetes , arthritic knees and high blood pressure. That in itself has improved my mood exponentially.

I can take my Seroquel XR and Trileptal without gaining weight. My psychiatrist had no problem with the surgery but recommended the sleeve for better absorption of meds. I can excercise daily. ...that maintains a healthy mood. Don't be afraid. But stay in compliance with your psychiatrist and check out Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy. It's therapy designed for people with BP. If you can't find a practitioner, please private message me. I may be able to help u find someone.

Peace

Hi Miss Kathy. That is really encouraging. Did you have any trouble swallowing and keeping down your meds the day of surgery and the few/several days after?

thanks,

Elsee

I’ve been BPII for about 13 years. Seroquel made me gain 100 lbs. I’m down 80 and have had no problem at all absorbing my meds. Some of them come in liquid or can be compounded but the ones I’ve tried taste like ass. I didn’t take my BP meds for 2 days after surgery because I was scared to try but they all went down perfectly, though slowly. I take about 15 pills a night. 4 of them are horse pills.

I'm bipolar also I also have a ton of pills to take every day. I just took my meds slowly and I got my meds in without any problems. I also take Seroquel, and all my meds stayed down I didn't have to open up the capsules in my Prozac or anything.

I had to quit the seroquel. By itself it made me gain a ton of weight and caused basically uncontrollable midnight cravings for crap foods. Combo made me gain 100 lbs. (totally not sure if I already wrote that). At least Lamictal is working well as my sole bipolar med for now. Always mildly manic but it helps me do two a days in the gym. Lol

Type I is the more classic bipolar you think of with the sky high highs. II is more mild and you get hypomania. Personally, I’m rapid cycling and normally mostly depressed bipolar but last time I adjusted meds I would cycle between the two probably 50 times a day. Bipolar II is kind of baby bipolar but still put my in the psych hospital when I was 17.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
