Hello good day I hope that everyone is doing well. My name is Samantha, I'm 28 years old and I had my first consultation with the surgeon yesterday. His office set me up for my first visit with the nutritionist in 2 weeks. I was previously seeing a nutritionist but he said that I will have to start over with a nutritionist through his office. He also stated that I will have to see the nutritionist consecutively for 6 months before submitting for approval. I called my insurance provider just to make sure that the procedure is covered because in the benefits booklet that I received from them it states that it is not. The representative that I spoke to said that it is in fact covered and she listed what they required. But for the supervised diet history she said that they only require 3 months within the last 6 months, so I am a bit confused.

Is there anyone who has 1199 insurance that can tell me what they went through ?

I was wondering if maybe that 6 month period was just his requirement.

Thank you

Check with his office - it may be his requirement. My insurance did not have any waiting or supervised diet period, but my surgeon requires a minimum of three months supervised by his dietitian and attendance at group support meetings run by the hospital.

It was well worth it. It gave me time to get my head in the right place, to have all the pre-op testing done (pulmonary, cardio, psych, endoscopy, barium swallow, bloodwork, etc.) and learn more about what my new life would be like. About 2 weeks prior to surgery I had a day long pre-op/post-op diet class going over everything I needed to know for my pre-op and post op diet.

I know that right now six months seems like a really long time, but it's really not. Hang in there. It's worth it.

@ Diana_in_Philly

Ok thank you for you response. I figured that it may just be his requirement and he also did warn that if I don't lose any weight during the supervised diet he won't go through with the surgery. Ill give his office a call to double check. He said in about 4 months he will send to do all the other evaluations and testing that ill need to have done. I know the time will go by quickly but looking at it now it just seems so far away, Ill just try not to let that discourage me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
