Travel 5 Weeks Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Am I crazy to think I can go away for a long weekend 5 weeks post-op? The trip is only 1.5 hours in the car. We will be staying in a rental with a full kitchen. I will have my kids with me but my husband will be with us to help out. We will probably be doing some lite hiking and swimming. We will be vacationing with another family and I'm sure that food and alcohol will be abundant. I am definitely prepared to abstain from drinking alcohol at that point and plan on bringing post-op friendly foods. Any input is greatly appreciated.

@Redo2017

I traveled about 6 weeks post op last year for Thanksgiving. I was nervous about not having my soft Proteins with me and readily available. I got a hotel with a mini fridge. When I arrived, I went to a nearby grocery store and bought yogurt, cheese and a few Protein Shakes. I find when traveling it's best to have these things available to you. Remember to eat regularly since you will be moderately active!

Im sure there will be munchies around as there always is with vacations and kids: chips, drinks etc. Just be good to yourself and try your best to stick to your plan. At Thanksgiving the hosts I was with had bowls of Chex mix lying around, my weakness! I ate a small handful but didn't beat myself up over it. 95 percent of the time I was on track. Have fun and be prepared with your soft proteins. And definitely skip the alcohol, you're still healing and it would wreak havoc on your tummy.

Good luck!

I've been thinking about this issue as well. I'm have surgery 7/3 and my annual girls beach trip is on 8/10. I haven't told them about the surgery yet. Debated telling last Wednesday at our monthly dinner but chose to wait. Guess the cat will be out of the bag pretty quick. Me and my GF who is an expectant mom will be their DD. 😊

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
