Flying with the lap Band

Recommended Posts

I have a question about flying with the lap band. My doctor has recommended that I have some Fluid removed before my flight. How much do they normally remove and will they put it all back in at one time when I return? I don't want to have slowly build back up to where I am. I am probably one fill away from being green.

I think the swelling that is normal for your feet and such when you fly also irritates the band a bit. I drink more Fluid and eat less until I get to my destinations. I got "stuck "
Once on a long flight and it was not pleasant.
I was much better the next day Now I bring Protein Bars or some nuts and string cheese to get me there.
Bon voyage

I would suggest you have a fill after your holiday especially if you were having trouble before. The band can tighten with flying.

I would have a little, not all removed. When I flew to Hawaii, I had some swelling and suddenly could not swollen anything. Not even Water. After 3 complete days of not being able to keep anything down and being severely dehydrated and very weak I ended up in the ER getting two ivs of Fluid and an unfill. As soon as they took the fluid out, I gulped down a tons of water. I was Soooo thirsty.

My insurance did not cover it so it ended up costing me over $3,000! After that, I took no chances when it came to flying.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
