3 weeks post op. Almost always have diarrhea

Recommended Posts

Hi there - I am 3 weeks sleeve post-op and on the soft food stage. Per recommendation from my program, I'm also taking Probiotics via yogurt / kiefer, BUT I have nearly constant diarrhea and almost no solid stool. I run to the bathroom a lot, especially after eating or drinking. I also use Lactaid instead of milk to avoid lactose. Is this normal / have others experienced this?

I'm not eating sugar or anything (I don't think this is dumping syndrome).

You might get tested for bacteria.. totally drawing a blank on the type.. but there is a type that can take over after the antibiotics given after surgery kill off the good bugs.

I can see why you'd say that because of OP saying they're on Probiotics. Nice catch.

So antibiotics would run roughshod over the flora in one's gut and digestive tract all the way to the anus, leaving open the possibility of opportunistic pathogens like bacteria to take the place of otherwise useful bacteria. There's way too many bad bacterias to list, the dangerous ones though people should know well.

It happens when on liquids.

Also for me it happens because I drink a ton of Water every day.

I wish... it never happened to me... I have the opposite

Just make sure whatever you're consuming doesn't increase your regularity. For me I was just taking milk of magnesia as I was told.. stuff made me literally a hydrant every 2 hours was destroying the toilet, which my pissed off wife made me clean up. :57_cry:

Also, it's just a hunch of mine, but I do think I might have developed some kind of lactose intolerance post-op.

I am using benefiber rather than a laxative and it has been better. I know this is too much information but I was constipated before the surgery and not much has changed. However, it is better with benefiber

Same thing happened to me. I was tested for c. Diff, which came back negative. I ended up starting the puree stage a week early, it has settled down since

I had runny stools until I went to full liquids and incorporated two different probiotics and benefiber. No more diarrhea after that. Both probiotics can be bought on amazon: Bio Kult and Prescript-Assist. Together they contain a wide range of healthy bacteria

This was an issue for me and once the Doctor ruled out C-diff he said it was fine to take immodium as needed. It made it much easier to leave the house and only occasionally is a problem at 12 weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
