ryan_86 335 Posted May 30, 2017 I was sleeves in September and have reached goal weight. I haven't had any major complications. However, not infrequently when going to sleep, or sometimes when I've been asleep, I wake up slightly regurgitating, sometimes almost on the verge of vomiting. I'm not overfull or uncomfortable, and my diet is very consistent. I typically have a Protein Shake and small snack in the evening. I can't discern any pattern in what I eat and when this occurs. Before I reach out to my surgeon, I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this.
Navigating the Wilderness 824 Posted May 30, 2017 Sounds a lot like GERD. It happened to me quite a bit before surgery.
ryan_86 335 Posted May 30, 2017 Sounds a lot like GERD. It happened to me quite a bit before surgery. Is it possible to have GERD without the heartburn? I've had GERD for years and take a med for it, and I almost never have heartburn, and I didn't have this problem prior to surgery.
MarinaGirl 609 Posted May 30, 2017 (edited) Best to contact your physician about this to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. You could have silent reflux, which may present with no heartburn. Edited May 30, 2017 by MarinaGirl
Navigating the Wilderness 824 Posted May 30, 2017 When that happened to me, it was usually not accompanied by heartburn. I would just wake up from sleeping that way. I agree it is a good idea to talk to your Surgeon though.
Gwoman77 9 Posted May 30, 2017 I hear this is a common side effect from the sleeve operation. It is gastric reflux. Tell your dr. 1 MarinaGirl reacted to this
neyney1960 23 Posted May 30, 2017 I'm only 4 weeks post-op but GERD is a real issue for me. I finally broke down and started taking my Nexium again. I still have issues after eating even soft foods but the Nexium is helping. I've work up a few times with that same feeling you have, which is the feeling of regurgitation and/or the need to vomit. I also have sinus troubles and have post-nasal drip which sometimes causes the GERD. Whenever my sinus's flare up I either sleep in a recliner sitting up or if you are fortunate enough and you have an adjustable bed you can sleep sitting up a bit. It helps. JT2002TJ 170 Posted May 31, 2017 I do not have reflux, and am pre-VGS. But, I have always kept my bed elevated. A trick I use, I heard from a doctor years ago, is to get a few pieces of plywood (3/4" thick or greater). Put these under the feet of the head of your bed. You will only slightly notice that the bed is elevated, but apparently it does wonders for people who have reflux. You can usually get scraps free from Home Depot/Lowes. Just get pieces at least a square foot so the bed doesn't fall off (if it does, it's easy to push the wood back under the feet). Best thing is, this is free/cheap, so if it doesn't help you can come back here and yell at me without your wallet hurting!
