Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had trouble with UTIs since having their weight loss surgery? I was sleeved approx. 1 year ago and now suffer with these more frequently than ever. Someone mentioned to me it might be my alcohol intake, another one said not enough Water.< /span>

The National Women's Health Information Center lists these common causes of urinary tract infections in women:

  • Wiping from back to front after a bowel movement.
  • Having sex.
  • Holding urine for too long.
  • Being diabetic.
  • Having a kidney stone or other factor that makes it difficult to urinate.
  • Producing less estrogen, such as after menopause.
  • Having recently had a catheter inserted

You may want to visit a urologist to see if there is an underlying cause. I once read an account from someone that had a kind of pouch form on her urethra. The pouch held onto infected liquid, and so the infection never really would clear. Thus, recurrent infections. I have no idea how common such a thing could be, but just thought I'd mention it.

And, of course, cranberry juice, orange juice, lots of Water, etc.

Personally, I've only ever had two (touch wood), and they both happened after TMI... anal sex... despite a shower right after. Be sure to empty your bladder after any sex. (I know it is tempting to go right to sleep).

There are supplements that are supposed to help, but I'm not that versed in them.

Good luck, and let us know if you figure anything out!

I've had two UTI's after my sleeve surgery. One at about 3 months post op and the other just a few weeks after that. I had a few trips to the ER because of some pain... I was having trouble with Constipation at the time and my hernias were giving me pain. Anyway, while I was in the ER they did the urine tests and found UTI's both times. They also said I was dehydrated, and I had to stay all day to get IV fluids. I remember thinking that I thought I had been getting in plenty of liquids. I guess I wasn't. So my suggestion is to get over your 64 ounces of fluids a day, and if you are drinking alcohol, remember that it will dry you out. Be sure to drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.

Hope the UTI's stop bothering you soon. :)

Definitely go see your doctor.

Meanwhile, bumping up your fluids is a good place to start to rule out chronic dehydration.

Thanks so much for the information about the "pouch" in the urethra. Apparently I have a 2cm stone sitting in this type of pouch and it can only be removed surgically...I'm bummed about it but don't want it to get infected so...AGH!!!

Oh my gosh! I guess those things are more common than anyone would have thought!

Glad you have an answer, but more surgery is the pits :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
