Discouraged after initial consult Low BMI woes

Recommended Posts

I guess i'm just venting/whining. I had my initial consult today. I managed to hit the target BMI (35.5) but I don't want to confess what I had to eat to make sure the scale read what it did. Their electric tanita scale measured me 4# less than my home scale, which was a little disappointing. (this was after eating a steak biscuit and drinking 40 oz of fluid).

All went well, but the dr and the patient rep both told me I cant lose any weight for the next 4 months (even though the fepblue insurance book doesn't say this). How am I supposed to do a supervised diet for 4 months and maintain this weight (my highest weight EVER)? I don't mind a weekend binge to hit a single weigh in, but there is no way to maintain this for 4 months - I don't even think I could fake it. right now I feel like I'm about to have a heart attack from this past weekend's eating and my current weight. the good news is this has my BP way high (yay! another comorbidity!)

I made all my follow ups - my first being in 2 weeks for the EGD. but I'm seriously wondering if I should even continue because maintaining 'all this' weight seems impossible. How does everyone else deal with this?

Next appt is EGD in 2 weeks. I was hoping he'd order a gallbladder ultrasound (because I have symptoms) but he said they don't do that.

not only am I fat and yet not "fat enough", but now i'm discouraged...what a great combination, lol.

I was similar. My initial consult went the same. I went twice and gave
up. Fast forward a year later, I was back in his office with a BMI of 38, high blood pressure and sleep apnea, and my highest weight since I was pregnant. As a yo yo dieter, I struggled for 6 months to maintain this high weight, and I did. Over that course I gained and lost the same 7 pounds. Surgery is Friday for me!

I am in the same boat. I feel ridiculous not trying to lose weight. I ended up gaining for my first weigh in! My doctor said don't lose more than a pound and do not gain at all. The good news is they really just look at your first and last weigh in. I am over half way there and I really did feel the same way that you did in the beginning. I am using this time to start to ready myself for the changes - changing one thing a month. I have given up carb sides and diet cokes so far, next up is caffeine (have mercy!). Starfishwish is right either do it now or do it later....just a longer amount of time to be miserable.

more discouragement. found out just now that I will also be disqualified since I wasn't obese enough in 2016. If I dropped below 35 during the two year period (I did), then they will not cover it.

so even if I could maintain the 35 BMI for the next 4 months, I still cant meet their 2 year history. I can meet start bmi, and the end bmi, but in between is a mixed bag of highs and lows.

oh well. we'll see what the EGD shows before deciding on the next step. ~sigh~

But of course they'll pay for the BP medicine that my PCP will probably prescribe tomorrow since my BP was 180/95 today. grrr.

thanks guys!

I too was told not to go too low. You have high bp so I wonder why that wouldn't qualify you? Stinks

I hope that isn't the case! I had to show a three year history for BC Anthem and I have been steady 35 for two years. The first year I was lower.

I'm in a similar situation, as my NUT doesn't want me to lose no more than 8 pounds. I have already lost 3 of those eight. I have no comorbidities and I just barely meet the BMI requirements for my insurance. I have a sleep study scheduled in 2weeks -kind of hoping I have sleep apnea but at the same time I don't since I really don't want to use a CPap machine. I have slacked off at the gym just so I can maintain my weight for now. But in the meantime, I'm getting back into meal preps and trying my best to stick to a low carb diet. I still have 4 more months of supervised diet.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
